    50 Shades of Rooster

Because apparently, while he is a nice guy, he likes a little bit of rough play with the ladies. I really like Fred, he is a beautiful Black Orpington rooster. He is not aggressive to me, seems to do a good job keeping an eye on the hens when they are free ranging, I love his crowing...

The New Coop and Run - UPDATED with Finished Pix

A few weeks ago, I lost my favorite hen to a Cooper's Hawk. She was not the first, but by god, she is going to be the last. I have free ranged for several years, and am having to curtail the time out. Sooooooooo...we are building a new coop and run. I only have 11 birds now (because the GD...

Looking for the hen who isn't there

I feel like a complete idiot, but figured there is no other group of people who will even come close to understanding. I have lots of chickens, I have lost lots of chickens (my flock free ranges and there will always be predator losses). But...this one, this Ethel. Every night the hens put...

Roosters dancing over next to you

This is my first year with roosters, although I've had hens for a few years now. My chickens are all pretty socialized; the roosters are almost 5 months old, and have started ... dancing sideways to scoot next to me when we visit (they all free range during the day). I can't tell if this is...

Young hen broken leg above hock

Little Ahab injured her leg two weeks ago, at 3 weeks. Not sure if it was broken or dislocated, but the injury was above the hock, the area where the leg joins the body. I brought her inside (with a friend) and she did very well; after a week the toes uncurled and she began hopping about...

    Rooster going after broody hen

Ethel (my buff orpington) hatched out 10 chicks in a brooder box on one side of the coop. The flock free ranges during the day, but mama and chicks were kept in the run - I have barn cats and really did not want to lose a chick to one of the cats. The chicks are 4 weeks old, and I have been...

Crooked toes - how old to too late to treat?

Got chicks from a local breeder; the two Rhode Island reds both have crooked toes - curled sideways not under. The chicks are 4 weeks old - is it too late to try and boot the babies to correct the toes? They seem to be getting worse...

Brown Leghorn - Rooster or Hen?

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j166/KateAndJoe/Rushing%20Rd/Chickens/P7200010.jpg I think she's a hen...she's supposed to be a hen. But her comb and wattles are so much larger than the other two from her clutch. She just does not seem to have enough color brilliance to be a rooster, but...

Wyandottes trying to kill the new hens

I thought I'd done everything right. Raised my new chicks indoors for 6 weeks. Moved them out to the coop to an area that was separate from the big hens (2 years old), but only through fencing, so they could see, hear, etc. One week in that space, then made an entry so the chicks could have...

Oh no - goslings? What to do...

I have chickens. In fact, I have six more chicks arriving April 9. Today a friend dropped by to ask if I wanted two Toulouse geese when they hatched (sometime in the next two weeks). OMG OMG OMG. Yes, of course I want them - I love geese, I think. But I need some direction and am hoping...

    Labels won't stick to cartons

I planned on making my own labels - but I cannot find any label that will stick to the cardboard cartons - they just come right off. I would hate to use plastic cartons just so I could put labels on them. Anyone here have a fix for this problem?

    Using bait stations for mice

The mice have moved into my chicken coop, and the cats are having a hard time keeping up (although they are getting quite stout with trying). I would like to put some of the bait stations in and around the coop, but can't find some basic answers to my questions - hopefully you guys can answer...

    Gifts for hen lovers

Well - on the list of stupid gifts that turn out to be fabulous: the Henrietta egg cooker. http://www.amazon.com/Maverick-SEC-2-Henrietta-Cooker-White/dp/B00004SABW I am loving this thing - poached eggs without the mess, soft or hard boiled eggs so much easier (and who ever thought things...

    Death from Post-Traumatic Hawk Stress?

A year of blissfully happy free-ranging. About three weeks ago, a big hawk moved in - not sure if it is a Cooper's or Red-Tail, but I suspect a Cooper's. Found one hen dead in the woods, with a broken back, and one missing - I assumed a dog because I could not imagine a hawk chasing a hen...

Not a prolapsed vent..but what is this

This morning, my year-old Silver Laced Wyandotte (Jessica) had something dangling from her vent. I was concerned about a prolapsed vent, but no - no redness, no swelling, no noticeable issue - just this string. I pulled it gently out, it is almost like the membrane between the shell and the...

    Hens Come to the Door

    Henleys Say No to Snow!!

Not fans of the snowy weather. Like the obedient hen servant I am, I delivered treats to the run today, instead of their normal snack area. On the plus side, the accumulation of snow on the hardware cloth turned the run into a cozy igloo!

    Wintertime roosting

The hens are cozying up like never before, and spending more time in the rafters (which I guess are warmer, maybe?) Perhaps if they would STOP moulting, they would be warmer....
