They have tons of space- I invested a lot of money on professionally built coops with roost bars, power for radiant heat and sand bedding since it provides grit, keeps down bugs, and is far more sanitary. Lots of room was high on my list and they really enjoy it (of course it required 5 coops...
Sorry for so many messages- I did just look up photos of the SL chickens when their feathers start changing and it looks exactly like him. I guess he does have that.
That’s wonderful. I always hoped mine could live very long lives with excellent care. The only hens I have lost were one to a hawk, one to a coyote, one from a broken leg that wouldn’t heal, and one who just laid down on the ground and seemed to fall asleep while sunning herself...
This was exactly when his feathers were changing colors- I didn’t get any pictures I saved because I took him to the vet. I was happy it finally healed up but it was bizarre.
This was exactly when his feathers were changing colors, and the ones that grew back were white, as have been all the...
Since you are a compulsive reader of highly valuable info, maybe you can answer the last thing the vet was unable to explain or treat. Billy developed an area on his throat where the feathers broke off and it was raw and bloody for a while. The vet tested his skin, tried looking everything up...
Wow, that is good to know. The actual feathers are white, they aren't shafts. I can live, and so can he, with cosmetic changes as long as he is healthy. I haven't noticed any signs of vision loss, and infertility would actually be a good thing since I don't hatch out any eggs. I am impressed...
Yikes, I just always gave it to all of my hens. I had no idea it was specific to certain hens. So, if I have a flock with hens and Billy, what is the best feed you would recommend? I really can't separate their food sources.
I use layer feed with 16% protein. The guineas eat 18% protein and he occasionally conducts a raid on their feed but he never gets more than a few pellets. Is there some specific brand that you use or are they all based on the same protein and it doesn't matter? We have been using it for...
This looks like it has the potential to be mites, at least as a partial part of your problem; there is a good video on the chickenchick website that shows her cleaning up a mite infestation under their feathers and I've certainly seen it up close a few times. The medicine she recommends is...
Since the Wyandottes also are getting gray feathers, I'm assuming it isnt an autoimmune disease. What would be the odds of that happening? I'm voting oddball old man chicken! 😆
