Great Pyrenees puppy we got killed a chicken. Is it a lost cause or how should we train her?

I should add that even though I think they should be outside, at 3 months old she is nowhere close to being big enough to protect herself from coyotes. If you are in a predator heavy area you are taking a chance and need to know that. When we felt the coyotes were close we did bring her in...

Great Pyrenees puppy we got killed a chicken. Is it a lost cause or how should we train her?

I’m in almost the same situation. I got my GP at 5 months old. Up to that point she was living and working with her parents and a littermate. She was around every barn animal imaginable only supervised by her parents. She did great with my chickens for 6 months!! Because of this I trusted her...

    Hawks-too many!

Okay my BYC pros…I’m sure I already know the answer but I’m desperate. I’ve had chickens 10 years. Maybe I’ve lost two to hawks. Then I moved two years ago and I lost 4 my first year. Devastated is an understatement. They went on lockdown and have for the past year. I just got 14 babies that...

Is it okay to tie my roosters???

Update: Grape is one of my sweetest roosters now. He is wonderful to his girls and to us. He has never been mean again to us or his girls. He loves them and is very gentle now. He needed to “learn” to be a rooster. I have another young one now doing the exact same thing and I’ve separated him...

    Hen with runny beak, sneezing

Just wondering how your girl is doing. I took in a stray and she is sneezing and has a runny nose. Not sure what to do to help her. My vet won’t see her because of bird flu! How ridiculous that I can’t even bring her to my chicken vet!! Hoping she recovers on her own.

    Chicken sneezing with runny nose

Thanks for the response. She was sneezing when I got her so I don’t think it’s related to what I’m using in my coop. She was outside for at least four days prior to me getting her. I’m hoping maybe it’s just related to being out in the environment. Pollen is high right now. I’m hoping with good...

    Chicken sneezing with runny nose

I took in a stray and she is sneezing with a runny nose. No other symptoms. Her feathers look excellent and her poop looks good. No mucous in eyes. Looks really healthy other than the sneezing and runny nose. She’s eating and drinking well. I have her quarantined and am practicing strict bio...

Average Life Span of a Chicken/Rooster?

I have 7 originals left from my first flock of 26. They will be 8 years old in about 3 weeks. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing when I first started so they lived in spite of me not because of me 😂

    Chunnel / Tunnels

Would love to hear what has worked for you! My girls are still in lockdown. We are working on the Chunnel but it’s a SLOW process

Chicken Chunnel off of run to run extension (and pics of coop)

I wouldn’t leave them in at night, only during the day instead of free ranging! Seems like it would be a great alternative.

Hawk near miss. Looking for clarity!

Seriously?! I’m scouting the internet trying to learn how to make Chunnels and you had a girl killed in one?! I thought this was the ultimate in safety. I’m so disappointed now. My girls are on lockdown and I need to come up with a way to keep them safe. I thought this was awesome. 😭😭

Chicken Chunnel off of run to run extension (and pics of coop)

This is awesome! Looking at making a Chunnel. I don’t know how else to keep my girls safe. I’ve lost 4 in 16 months and it’s devastating. They have been on lockdown for 2 weeks and it’s miserable.. for me and them! Is there a reason you only use the Chunnel when you are outside instead of free...

    Chunnel?

I want to buy one too. Not sure I have the time to make one. 4 years later you still can’t. 😟

    Chunnel / Tunnels

This is awesome! Trying to come up with a way to keep my girls safe from hawks. They are in lockdown after close calls and one death. Do they feel like they are still free ranging this way?! Or are they trying to find their way “out”? Would love to share your video but couldn’t figure out how...

    Hawk attack

I still have my girls locked up. It’s awful, but I can’t take the chance. We had 2 close calls 2 days in a row and the third day the hawk got one. She was under a tree right next to the coop. She should have been safe. It’s kinda like going in the ocean. You could get bitten by a shark but you...

    McDonough, GA

Does anyone know the current chicken laws here firsthand? The laws online that I have found haven’t been updated since 2013. Looking at buying a house here. Thanks!

    Hawk killers? Liege Fighter?

I know this is an old thread but I have a major hawk problem. Found a hawk standing on one of my little silkies. Amazingly didn’t kill her. The next day a hawk was on top of my huge rooster squished up underneath the coop. The next day it killed one of my hens. My girls are locked up now. I have...

    Tips for deterring hawks?

I have 2 dogs. One which actually barks at the sky if there is a predator and ran a hawk off who was on top of one of my girls I still lost a chicken this week. She was 2 feet away from the coop and my dogs were in the yard. Hawks are ruthless and nothing deters them. Don’t count on the dogs to...
