Lost my 9-month-old EE to a small hawk or falcon today. It's now stalking my yard since I interrupted it's breakfast My girls are so freaked out they won't come down from the top of the coop. I don't know what to do about that falcon, though.
My BR started laying last week at 23 weeks.
We put plastic Easter eggs in the nest box - we were hoping they would get the point and not lay elsewhere, and it worked! They all lay where they are supposed to.

I think you should name your new girl "Alice" - she reminds me of Alice Cooper with all that black eyeliner!
Also, your BRs look a lot like mine did as a baby - and she just started laying last week. It will take a few more weeks until anyone can really take an educated guess.
Good luck with...
We just put 3 5-week-olds in with our 4 20-week-olds. I made sure for the first few days that when the littles were free-ranging, the big ones were in the run and vice versa. I only let them mingle when I was out there to supervise. I did let the big ones peck at the babies a bit but stepped in...
My 21 week-old BA laid her first egg on Wednesday, and hasn't laid another one. Is this normal? We were so excited, it's hard not to be disappointed now. What gives??
Thanks everyone! The meeting with the ordinance committee went well, now we just wait for it to come up for the vote. Apparently it needs to be voted on twice for it to pass? Things are looking good, but the committee is on recess in August so it looks like it won't be picked up again until...
Nope, not butchering my little guy. He and Rosie are going to live with friends who have a backyard farm in North Attleboro. At least I'll get to visit! I'll get some good pics before he goes and send them to you
But it also means I now have to find a new home for him and his sister . He is a beauty of a Cochin, black and buff and red. His sister is all black. If anyone wants a pair of bantam Cochins, let me know...but I'll be so sad to see them go. Sigh.

I'm going to call the hatchery yet again today. Maybe I can send them a pic and they can let me know. I don't know if they even sell meat birds. And, FWIW, these chicks were never actually red - always buff and brown with chipmunk stripes as babies (that's one of them in my avatar)...
The only reason I'm hesitant to believe they are broilers is because they are big ALL around - big fat legs as well as the rest of them. They do seem to have big breasts though. The only thing is that I spoke to the guy at the hatchery (I think it was called Clearview in PA??) and he said they...
I have a great pair of 9-week-old bantam cochins, have been raising them since day-olds but unfortunately, Rocco is a roo He is a very pretty boy, mostly black with buff and red hackle feathers. She is almost all black. I want to keep them together and sell them to a BYCer who will love them...
