    Broody egg problem - questions

Pretty sure you're right! Thanks for the input. One of the things I love most about keeping chickens is that I learn new things from them and about them every single day :)

    Broody egg problem - questions

The eggs were from a few different groups - one roo is just under 2 and the other is a year old. The hens and pullets are similar ages. In particular, the eggs from the year old roo and his flock have had almost 100% fertility/hatch success this spring, so it was startling that they were quitters.

    Broody egg problem - questions

I'm still learning about broody hens and this one's been hard to describe in a way that brings up any search results. I have a hen - a pullet, really, about 10 months old, but I thought I'd indulge her in brooding. I put four eggs from mature hens known to have high fertility and healthy hatches...

    Roosters

I love roosters and would keep them all if I could. Mine are handled from day 1, but I don't put up with bad behavior. If they show any aggression toward me or other humans, I pick them up and football carry them for a while. This doesn't always work, and I'm not hesitant to cull for human...

Pied coloration on a mixed Orpington

I wanted to share this unique looking chick I hatched a couple of months ago. She (we hope - all signs are good so far) is the offspring of my blue Orpington rooster and his daughter, who is black and from a Buff Orpington hen. Where on earth did this pied/mottled coloration come from? I don't...

    Metzer Farms Review(s)

Just received another fantastic group of ducklings from Metzer this past Friday. I live in super-rural Maine, so it's always a nail-biter. Last year the ducklings missed their truck in the "big" city and I had to drive two hours to get them. This year it all went perfectly! I opened the box to...

    Sell me on a bird

Ducks! (I'm very biased though). Ducks are messy around water, but they complement chickens well when free ranging as they will eat different things - mine eat grubs and ticks and other unpleasant grass-dwellers, and don't disturb the earth the way the chickens do. I'd recommend a large docile...

Antibiotics - once or twice daily?

Thanks! Do you have any criteria that you use for when to give 10mg/kg vs 15mg/kg?

Antibiotics - once or twice daily?

Thank you! ❤️ I was having a search failure. I've bookmarked it for future needs.

Antibiotics - once or twice daily?

Hello BYC - I'm treating a duck for an infection and have seen conflicting advice. I'm using the 10% enrofloxacin and she's 8 lbs - would be grateful for confirmation on dosage and schedule as I calculated it at 0.4ml but am not sure if that's once or twice daily. I'm giving it to her orally...

    Bachelor flock

Good input, thanks folks! The three bachelors are growouts from last spring. Right now I have my hens condensed into larger flocks with one rooster each, for ease of winter chicken keeping. Come springtime one or all of these boys will have a chance at their own small flock. Not all will make...

    Bachelor flock

For those successfully keeping a bachelor flock - how tolerant do you find you need to be of fighting? My three boys are going through a phase where they want to (and often have) beat each other bloody. Just comb and wattle wounds, but we all know how those bleed! I don't see a defined bully in...

Hen with lump on face, wasting away

Thank you for the suggestions - I'll check them. The lump is hard. No bubbling in the eye. If I can make it work to get a necropsy I will - our state lab is 2 hours away and our post office is open incredibly inconvenient hours. Ah, rural life. I will not let her suffer - she's still burbling...

Hen with lump on face, wasting away

Our dear Shirley will likely pass in the next few days, but I'd like to hear any opinions for my ongoing education. Shirley is a Mystic Marans from Tractor Supply hatched in March 2022. Here's a photo of the lump on her face from mid-October, when she was still fairly well: Symptoms: Large...

    Maine

We were incredibly lucky! Even just down the road, others are waiting for power, and we're only a couple dozen miles or so from where there were 93mph gusts recorded. Hope others can check in and let us know how they are.

    Maine

That was a heck of a storm! We're fine at my place - miraculously no trees down near the house, only in the woods, and all the chicken structures held up. We did lose power but only briefly, last night. I hope everyone's power comes back on before the cold returns full force!
