    Watering below 0

It's my first winter with my flock. It's been below zero farenheit for weeks, with the average being -10. We have a metal waterer with a heating element in the tank. The part the chickens drink out of freezes solid and I have to keep going out there to unfreeze it during the day. It's a pain...

    Minor injury

Do I need to do anything for this? My about 8 week old chick got her head stuck in the chicken wire of our run. She seems ok, but I noticed a little blood. She's in the coop with the other chicks now. I was letting the chicks out of their enclosure to mingle in the run. This one hurt herself...

    Coop insulating/heating bitter cold (Alaska)

We had our first frost this week. It's currently 35 degrees, but it can get as low as -40 in the middle of winter. I have 5 egg laying pullets that are about 6 months old. I also have 4 pullets that are about 8 weeks old. They're all in the unheated, uninsulated coop. They 8 week olds are...

    Allergic to eggs!

We are 6 months into our chicken journey. We have a wonderful flock of egg laying pullets. We also just found out my 3 year old daughter is allergic to eggs. 😭 I'm so bummed! Just when we're all excited about getting fresh eggs, we have to stop using them in our cooking (at least for my daughter).

Transferring to coop, use dog crate?

My chicks are 4 weeks old and outgrowing their current brooder in the garage. I'm considering weaning off the heat lamp in the next 1-2 weeks and putting them in my coop. I have a small wire dog crate and I'm thinking of placing it in the coop to separate the baby chicks from my 23 week old...

    Just one soft/broken shell egg

Last night, I noticed a yolk on the coop floor. It barely had a shell at all, just a floppy layer that looked like it was supposed to be a shell. All my other eggs have been solid, so this was a surprise. I have 5 pullets and I know at least 4 of them have been laying. They're about 20 weeks...

    Red Star chicks - gender?

These little chicks are about 2 weeks old. They were sexed as pullets with a 90% success rate (per the seller). I'm really hoping they're all pullets, because we're not keeping cockerels (already sent 3 to freezer camp from our 1st flock). I think... #1 is growing into a cockerel. #2 looks...

    New flock members!

I just brought 4 baby chicks home to eventually join my Fluff Bottomed Girls in the big coop. They're Red Star, so I'm excited to see what they'll grow up to look like. 😍 My others are a barnyard mix of Easter Eggers, Leghorn, and Barred Rock parents. I hope these all turn out to be pullets (90%...

    What's your flock name?

Did you name your flock/coop? Let me hear it! I haven't named mine yet, but I've been thinking about it.

Neighbor's chicken hiding in my yard

My chickens are in an enclosed run/coop. They do not free range. I noticed a "wild" chicken in my yard outside of the coop and I tracked down her owners. The owner came over to get her chicken back and the chicken had disappeared. I can't seem to catch her myself, so she's been sleeping in the...

Who is hiding in my bushes?

A neighbor's hen is free ranging in my yard. All my chickens live in an enclosed coop/run setup. This one has been trying to get in and then hiding in the bushes when I go out there. I'm pretty sure she attacked my cat last night, who also free ranges. It looks like he was pecked hard in the...

    First egg ever!!

I've had my flock since April and we finally got our 1st egg! I'm so excited! It was outside of the nesting box. I marked it with a sharpie and set it in one of the boxes, to hopefully get them to lay in the box.

    Cockerel?

3 months (about 13 weeks) old, leghorn mix. I asked a few weeks ago about a few in my flock, but now this one is bigger. No crowing. My other cockerels are already crowing. It gives me hope that maybe this is a pullet.

    Too many cockerels

My 3 year old daughter's favorite chick turned out to be a cockerel. My favorite is also a cockerel. We also have one more that's going to be cockadoodledooing any day. 3 young roosters, oh no! 😄 I'm new at this. We already named all of them, big mistake! Now I don't think I can send them to...

When do I open the nest boxes?

My flock is about 11 weeks now. I have at least 5 pullets out of my 8 chickens. I hope 2 more are pullets, but they look like cockerels (and act like it 🤦‍♀️ ). Anyway, I have 5 nest boxes in the coop and they are currently closed off. At what point would you open them? I've read about putting...

    Pullet or cockerel?

I have 2 chickens in question! My friend incubated and hatched from her flock, so they may be mix breeds. I was told the black is an Easter Egger. I think he is a cockerel. He's pretty skittish compared to the others. He is about 8 weeks old. I have another in the flock who is definitely a...

    Rooster, new to this!

My flock is only 2 months old, so I'm still new to chickens. My mind is boggling with all the info I'm learning. I had no idea there was so much to learn about chickens! I feel really stupid for even saying this, but I didn't realize rooster and hens actually had "sex". I don't know what I...

Rat Terrier that wants to hurt chickens

I have a 15lb rat terrier. I know this breed is a natural hunter of small animals (rat is part of the name!). We've had him for 5 years already, so he's family. We've had chicks for about a month now. We got the chicks when they were 4 weeks old and my dog killed one on the first day! It was an...

    First timer!

Hi everyone! I'm a new chicken mom living in Alaska. I have 8 chicks. Six of them are 7 weeks old and two are 5 weeks old. They were hatched from a friend, so I'm still figuring out which breeds I have. I believe I have 1 Barred Rock, 3 Easter Eggers (1 brown, 2 black), and 1 Leghorn (all...
