    Rescue chickens in Canada

Hi everyone! Is anyone aware of ways to rescue chickens in Canada? I’m in Ontario, but would be interested in any organizations or efforts anywhere in the country. I’ve joined a few rehoming Facebook groups, but figured I’d ask here as well. I’m particularly interested in rescuing hens from...

    Eggbound?

She could be, or something else could be causing her discomfort. Can you feel her belly to see if there’s an obvious egg, or any inflammation/fluid? Any other symptoms?

    Mixing ducks of different sizes

Thanks, that was my instinct, I do tend to be more cautious as well. We’ll focus on bigger breeds when finding new girls to integrate. And definitely a good point about ensuring a way to hide or take a break if needed!

    Mixing ducks of different sizes

Hi everyone! Maybe a dumb question, but should I be concerned about mixing ducks of different sizes? I currently have a flock of mostly Cayuga ducks and drakes, and I’m planning to add more females to even out the sex ratio. Should I avoid smaller ducks? I like runner ducks, for example, but...

    Adult goat castration - risks?

    Thanks, everyone! Appreciate the input.

    Adult goat castration - risks?

Hi all, I have an adult male goat who I am considering castrating. It’s probably either that, or full-time separation from my female goat and their new kid (also female). That would involve new fencing, getting him a friend, etc. If we go the castration route, it’ll be done by a vet surgically...

Hen - purple comb and swollen belly, but eating and not overly lethargic

I don’t know her age, at least a few years old. She hasn’t laid at least since I brought her inside. The fluid was an amber sort of colour. Her crop wasn’t draining initially, but after a few days it started to and she seems to be digesting things normally overnight now. I’m still mostly keeping...

Hen - purple comb and swollen belly, but eating and not overly lethargic

Yes, I agree. I think it’s that she isn’t clearly getting worse at this stage that is making me hesitate. I do not want to drag it out and have her suffer, so I appreciate your perspective.

Hen - purple comb and swollen belly, but eating and not overly lethargic

Hi everyone, another sick hen here. She was sick earlier in the year and bounced back completely, but for the last two weeks she hasn’t been well. Started as being a bit ruffled and standing away from everyone, and put herself to bed early. So I took her inside to monitor and treat. Overview...

Prolapse - passed squishy red mass??

That makes sense, thank you for your advice. Have you seen something like this before? I haven’t come across much info related to hens passing blood clots.

Prolapse - passed squishy red mass??

Unfortunately she passed away overnight :( I’ve attached a photo of the blob, and cut it open — I guess yes, a giant blood clot. I didn’t include anything for scale, but it’s pretty big! What would cause that? Do I need to worry about the rest of my flock? Her vent had some blood but I...

Prolapse - passed squishy red mass??

One of my hens came out of the coop with a prolapsed vent this morning, a bit bloody. This happened to another hen of mine last year, so I kind of know how to handle it. I isolated her, gave her a bath and set her up in a small cage with a blanket over top to keep her in the dark. I have pushed...

    Rooster - possible canker?

I’m not sure he was around pigeons, but certainly around wild birds. I’ll look into the medication! I’m in Canada, so it can be challenging to get things like that, but we’ll see. @dawg53 thank you. So then even once treated, there wouldn’t be a safe way to integrate him into my flock? Darn…...

    Rooster - possible canker?

We just got a rooster from a friend and have him in quarantine from our flock until we’re sure he’s healthy and he can integrate. I noticed that sometimes he’s shaking his head and clicking his beak or moving it as if he’s swallowing. I didn’t think too much of it, but then I noticed a bit of...

    Missing duck overnight

Finally managed to herd all of them into the chicken coop for the night! We’ll get working on a longer term solution, but good for tonight.

    Missing duck overnight

Thanks everyone :( I’ve looked pretty thoroughly again this afternoon and still no sign of her. I’ll keep looking!! Hoping my other ducks are safe.

    Missing duck overnight

On Monday morning, I went to feed the ducks and chickens, and one of my ducks is missing. :( No real signs of a struggle, the other ducks didn’t seem worked up, no pile of feathers or anything, just gone. The ducks refuse to sleep inside now that it’s spring, and all last summer they slept in...

Persistent white discharge/poopy feathers after prolapse

Not noticeably, I haven’t noticed any significant odour. That would make sense. Sounds like she’ll just regularly get baths then! :)

Persistent white discharge/poopy feathers after prolapse

Here are a couple photos, attached! She’s really messy today, I rinsed her off but I’ll need to give her a bath, it’s a bit cold right now though. The grey in her feathers is from her ash/dirt bath, and some of the wetness is from rinsing her as I took pictures, but otherwise you can see how...

Persistent white discharge/poopy feathers after prolapse

I think she’s laying infrequently, but I’m not completely sure. Last fall she did lay, some soft-shelled, some normal, but not sure recently. Is there anything to be done re: leaking??
