    Serial brooder

Any way to keep a hen from going broody? I have a lady who successfully hatched a clutch in September. She went broody again last month, went to broody jail, was good for a few weeks, and now she’s broody again. I’d like to not have to break out the cage every month…..

    How often do they brood?

I have a broody hen (Olive Egger) who just hatched a clutch in September, and is hunkering down in the nesting box again. I can’t let her brood again, both for her own health and because we don’t need any more chickens. I’ll scour other posts for tips for breaking her of her broodies, but was...

How long have you had fowl?

Just over a year, and my flock keeps growing….just recently a broody mama successfully hatched 6 chicks. Fortunately I anticipated that my flock might expand and I built a much larger coop than I thought I needed. I really love my birds and their quirky personalities!

    How long to isolate

I thought about that. The crate wouldn’t fit in the coop so I’d have to put her in the run. The temps at night have been in the 20s (and will be in the teens one night coming up), and I’m worried that she would be too cold in the run by herself without flockmates to roost with.

    How long to isolate

I have a hen who got a head laceration 3 days ago, I suspect from a hawk injury. I cleaned the wound and have been spraying it with Veterycin twice daily. She’s currently in a dog crate in a walk in basement, warmer than the 20 degree at night coop. She is perky, eating and drinking and...

Umm, do we have a rooster here?

How old? I don’t see saddle feathers….but those legs are pretty thick, and those might be rooster hackle feathers on the neck.

Broody mom was off nest….eggs still warm

We candled tonight (day 12), and out of the 10 eggs, 8 are very alive! Thanks everyone for your reassurance!

Broody mom was off nest….eggs still warm

Thanks, that’s really reassuring. We’ll see how it goes! And if she doesn’t hatch any this time, she might try again in the spring 😊

Broody mom was off nest….eggs still warm

I have a six month old Steele Egger who’s been brooding for four days now. When my son closed down the coop last night, he accidentally closed a door between the run and the coop (we usually leave it open). Broody mom was on her eggs all night, but sometime this morning she flew into the run to...
