You helped me with my butterball gender determination. I would like to provide an answer for rainy muddy runs and coops. I used to live in the PNW (Portland area) and it rains nonstop for like 7 months. I searched the internet for muddy run help and I was going to attempt straw. As I was trying...
Here are some reference photos to the rest. The white one is the dominant cockerel right now, I named him Salt.
Butterball remains a male until we see a squat! 💚
I crossed a Phoenix hen with a black copper maran rooster and let the hen hatch only one egg because she was SO BROODY all year. The single chick 🐥 looked pretty identical to this bird.
My best rooster was a maran, but I had a good Cochin Roo as well. The Cochin was more of a yard ornament than an actual rooster haha so yea, keep that in mind with the soft boys.
It also helps to get a young cockerel and put it with older already laying adult hens. They put him in his place a...
The frizzle makes it super hard for me. I have a 9 week old polish pullet and her poof is a perfectly round ball. The feathers on the head are round at the tips and they don’t droop at all. So I was looking for these qualities for a pullet but then the frizzle feathering is what I would have...
About a day after hatch I almost lost this little guy(?) and had to nurse him a lot. I named him butterball as a joke…like “oh it’s clearly a rooster, we’ll just stuff him and roast him like a butterball Turkey in 6 months” but of course they sit in your lap and cuddle with you and grow on you...
Meet Tom, a 6 month old rooster who sings the eggs song every morning at 630 (instead of crowing). What breed is Tom? He came out of a dark chocolate egg, has pink legs, but his chest is spotted like an Easter egger. His body shape is round like a basket ball. He is not aggressive, he’s clumsy...
I finally confirmed that shirley the bantam laid the egg. My Australorps are now laying eggs and they are twice the size and a darker color. It may be strange but my golden Phoenix is my best layer for now. Every day I get an egg from her. They just started and we are getting more light now so...
I have 5 hens(3 australorps,1 California grey, and one bantam) and I think my golden Phoenix bantam (Shirley) was the first and only bird to lay. She laid 5 eggs all the same size and color. And then stopped. I’m not sure why she stopped or what is going on. She is about 6 months old and is the...
To be honest, I incubated eggs from the farmers market and I have no idea what breed they are…one is an obvious mix of black copper maran and came out of a beautiful dark chocolate egg (the black chick). There’s no doubt he is a roo (he practically came out of the egg with pink comb and waddles...
Update: lighter bird is def a roo 😂 he's a good boy, got little baby waffles, should call him koolaid because he's so pink right now!
The other darker bird seems like a pullet.
Mystery bird is a mystery but maybe sex link. Head feathers came in black.
Here are some updated pictures for 3-4 weeks. Pictures 1,4,5 is the lighter bird. Picture 2,3 is the darker one. It seems they both have combs coming in more than any of the other chicks. Picture 3,6 is the mystery “pullet”, she's quite orange in the chest now. They love the dirt haha 😂
I also thought it may be a Black sex link. It was a “pullet” “australorp” from TSC. Then I started noticing the red head and was like...wait a minute, then the feathers started coming in redish barred and the beak is red not black like the other one.
I posted in the wrong section before. I think I have a pair of Cali greys, all was well until one was staring at me a lot and then the color was developing. One has much lighter feathers coming in and the other is much darker, even darker feet.
I also have a bird that was supposed to be a...
