    Help integrating

Hi there. I had a similar situation when I integrated a 4 month old pullet to my flock of four. I thought they were going to kill her. So, I kept her closed in a ”look but don’t touch“ pen for a couple weeks, and putting her in the coop after other girls went in. In the morning I‘d get up early...

    New family member

Yesterday, I integrated my new chicks into my small flock. The girls are five weeks, this past Thursday. So far, so good. First day they mainly stayed in the run, but today they hung around with the big girls. No significant integration issues, some minor chasing, but that’s it. I had read that...

    Raising chicks without a broody

Thank you for the detailed response. In the house, they’ll be in a large dog crate, so room for heated and cooled area. Outside, I plan to have them in a “see but don’t touch” run, then integrating them around 4-5 weeks. I currently only have two hens who are about 1.5 yrs old. I recently lost...

    Raising chicks without a broody

I’m getting a few chicks that are only a couple days old, and will be raising them without a broody. I’ve used a broody in the past and just let her do her thing. Now I’m not sure what to do. I live in Northern California and the night temps are in the 40s and days in the 60-70s. The chicks will...

    The Easter Egger Thread

I kept Stella and my other girls separate, with viewing only, for two days. They didn’t seem too interested in her, so the other night I put Stella in the same coop with the other girls in the evening, before the other girls went in. Fortunately, they were all alive in the morning. 😛 I just wish...

    The Easter Egger Thread

Got my first EE. She’s a beauty. Stella, she’s 6 months. I introduced her to my “flock” (3 golden sex links) yesterday, but they still haven’t accepted her. How long does it take for a new pullet to be accepted into the flock, or at least to stop being picked on by the other hens? My other three...

    on strike

One time, my pullet, Bernadette, stopped laying for about a week, or so I thought. I was starting to get worried, but then found a hidden nest that contained 9 eggs. Bernadette and Wilma had been laying there ( I can tell their eggs apart). Bernadette still struggles to lay in a nest box on days...

    Laying while molting

My golden sex link, Betty, is about 2.5 yrs. She started molting in late Oct last year and seems to be molting in sections rather than a full malt. She’s been molting her neck and head (around comb) for about two months. The other areas only took a few weeks each. I‘ve noticed she recently...

    Sick chicken?

I’ve had people (from this blog) recommend Duramycin 10, its pretty hard to find though, at least in the US. Fish Mox/ Aqua Mox works. Its an amoxicillin. I’ve had success with it on my Wilma. I ordered online from the manufacturer and had it within a few days. Good luck!

    Is this poop normal?

Between her legs. It’s actually decreased in size and doesn’t feel as soft. And I think she laid an egg yesterday and today. My other laying hen, Betty, is molting, so she isn’t laying. I‘m not sure if the chicks are old enough to lay yet (just turned 4 months). So, I’m pretty sure the eggs are...

    Is this poop normal?

I cant seem to find an antibiotic OTC, and I’ve called five vets and none see chickens. I know people say chickens can be give human grade antibiotics, but I don’t have any and I’ve asked everyone I know. I checked the flock again last night for mites and lice, and her belly was as full or...

    Is this poop normal?

She is walking fine, still very active, eating and drinking normally. Her poop started to get some firmness for a few days, then we got a couple days of horrible storms, and her poop became runny again. I have checked it worms and her for mites/lice. Thank you for the information.

    Is this poop normal?

Wilma is about 18 months ( guessing age, she was mature when I got her from the feed store). Recently her poop has been very watery. I didnt pay too much mine to it at first, as it was pretty hot here. However, the weather has cooled over the past couple weeks, and her poops is unchanged. She I...

    New mother hen

Hello! I’m a new chicken mom and coming here for help and advise. I have a small back yard flock of Golden Sex Links. Two are mature laying hens and three are three month old chicks. I do plan to rehome two of the chicks, as five hens are proving too much for me. Fortunately, I found them a...
