    Hello

Hi! Been a part of backyard chickens before. Ages ago. Stopped raising chickens when I was pregnant with my 5th child and we had had some bear attacks. Started a new flock this spring and my 5th child is now almost ten and turning into a fantastic little chicken farmer. We have a cochin bantam...

Gender help on 7-9wk old d'uccles and silkies

I have 10 of these babies and I'm hoping to know sooner than later which ones I can keep. I get to keep all hens and might get to convince my hubby to keep a rooster, but not sure on that one. ;-) I'd like one roo of each breed if they can get along. :) Can't get pics to post. Will try on a...

Looking for low egg production pet bantam breeds for my kids :)

We have egg laying chickens and do NOT need more eggs! ;-) I am already overrun with eggs. I may even sell some of my layers. However, what my kids really want is pets. ;-) We are looking for pretty, friendly, hardy birds who do not lay much. ;-) I really don't know anything about bantam breeds...

Chicken with one very swollen eye area but NO oozing

Hi, I have an 11-mo old Rhode Island Red hen with one eye nearly swollen shut. It's actually the area beneath her eye, swollen like a round lump. It looks like someone inserted a tiny marble in the flesh under her eye. There is NO oozing or other symptoms. The other ten hens appear healthy...

Egg color question...what breed? Delaware? other?

I have two new eggs today, basically identical, and am wondering who is laying them. They are smallish to medium in size and are a rich medium brown in color, a good deal darker than any others we have had from our Wyandottes and new Rhode Island layers. I have two mature Delaware hens I've had...

UPDATE! on mature hens I got for egg laying aren't - UPDATE! :)

I bought a few more hens from a friend some weeks ago--about four--because I wanted more eggs than the ones I'm getting from two hens. But, they have not layed a single egg since they've arrived. We free range, feed organic feed, give plenty of water, etc. They are cooped up safely at night and...

Please post some pics of Cochin eggs! (not bantam, though)

Hey, folks. I've had chickens for all of two months and got mine as pullets, except for one laying silver laced wyandotte hen. I think one of our two oldest pullets, a white cochin, and a golden laced wyandotte, is laying now. The two eggs I have found so far look the same as our silver laced...

What to do about my dog

I need to know if there is anything I can do about my dog. We accidentally let him get out with our chickens that we had only had for four days and he killed one. I had previously brought him out on leash for a little while and let him look at them, while anytime he tried to pull and go towards...
