I have a pet-sitter that does a very good job. She does exactly what we ask, and leaves detailed notes about what went on. Check your local paper or ads at your feed store. It costs, but it's worth the peace of mind.
I have long said that I would prefer to let my body go back to nature's cycles. Just toss my remains out where the coyotes, vultures, and flies can do just that. With that in mind, I will most likely donate mine to a body farm or choose decompiculture, which is pretty interesting and helps the...
I have a couple of leghorns in my flock of 30 or so, and they seem to mix well. They are not as friendly as the other breeds, but are no problem at all. And they lay lots of big eggs.
I'm hoping someone here can help. I'm in Kingman, and one of my egg customers has a relative coming to visit from your fair city. The relative wants to buy some of my eggs, and will take them back to Flagstaff -on the bus! She apparently really likes the fresh eggs, and the different colors from...
The natural color of teeth looks better to me, and from what I have read, whitening can weaken teeth. I'm hoping that it's a fad, but whatever it is, I'm not participating. Just a good toothbrush, some floss, and those nifty "go-betweens" is all I need. Then again, I have never even colored my...
A feeder that you can hang at about chest high to the chickens works well-they can't get their feet in it, and you only need to refill it when they empty it That really cuts down on the waste, and there is food available all the time.
I had the same problem. My solution was a minnow net from Wal-Mart. I'm glad no one could see me chasing sparrows around the coop, but after several days of work, and over 200 sparrows later (one session netted 130), not many go in the coop anymore. The feed bill has been reduced considerably...
Each chicken is an individual, even though the breed may have some overall characteristics. Was she an addition to the other two, or did she grow up with them? If she's the new kid on the block, so to speak, that may be part of the problem.
Yuck!!!
Here in Kingman, I see mattresses dropped off at one of the local thrift stores, even though it is well signed not to. I'm sure it happens at night when there isn't anyone to stop them. It's the same as stealing from the thrift store, as I'm sure they have to pay to have them hauled...
Try raising the fence and clipping their wings. Mine don't even try to go over my 4 ft. fence because their wings were clipped when they started trying to go airborn. Now they don't think they can.
Where in AZ! I'm in Kingman. I haven"t done any incubating yet, so can't help you with that question. As far as heat tolerant, my red stars and white leghorns have done well, but none have done badly, even the black astrolorps. As long as they have shade and water, they seem to do fine. They do...
Wow!! I had no idea that an owl would actually go in a coop after chickens! We have a Great Horned owl in our neighborhood, but I figured that my girls were pretty safe except in the mornings when they are out before it is really light. Guess I had better rethink that one!
If I lived in a climate that allowed peppers to be perennials, I would leave them be and just add more of your great compost to them each year. No matter how careful you are, moving them would damage roots.
