Welsummer and Ameraucana babies from Whitmore Farm
I've been using a 5 gallon bucket with nipples and a bird bath heater from Murdochs in a fairly mild Colorado season (so far). Our lowest low so far has been 9 degrees, and most nights it has been in the low twenties or high teens. Works like a champ. This next week will give us more typical...
I use a 5 gallon bucket with a bird bath heater and the nipple dispensers. So far - works great. We have been in the single digits at night - no freezing. This week might see our first below zeros. That will be a good test. This has been a super easy watering method for me. No mess, no ice.
Hi Janet. The 10 chickens I have right now are the first chickens I have ever raised, so I can't answer your question from personal experience. I got these girls (and 2 boys) in June.
I saw that you posted on the Wellsummer thread too. Those folks are great - and will fill you in on the...
Hi Janet. I have 4 Wellie hens, all from Whitmore Farm. Some of our eggs are dark and unspeckled, some are fairly dark and heavily speckled, and a few are light colored and heavily speckled. I don't know if some lines are more speckle prone - but at least some of the Whitmore Farm hens lay...
Hi Patty. I bought Wellies and Ameraucana chicks from Whitmore Farm in June. I have 1 wellie rooster and 4 wellie hens, and 2 ameraucanas. They are beautiful. I am waiting for my first eggs. I had my chicks shipped all the way to Colorado. I do not know what their rules are regarding...
I have a small flock, too. I have 10. 2 are roosters. They are the same age - and lived together since hatching. They are only 23 weeks old, but get along so far. Are yours together now? If the little guy doesn't try to dominate the older - they might get along. I have read a lot on this...
Do you mean a heated waterer with the chicken nipple dispensers? I have a very basic 5 gallon bucket with nipples. I bought a bird bath heater at Murdochs. So far works great. We haven't gotten really cold yet here, but it has worked so well that I do not anticipate problems this winter. 5...
Hi Mamma Dixie. My husband also ties flies. There are a few sources of fertilized eggs for fly-tying birds - but no chicks that I ever found. This is our first year with chickens, so we didn't want to try to hatch eggs. My husband got some bantam dark brahma hens for their hackle - but he is...
Here's a photo of a cockerel chick to contrast with the pullet photo Pink posted. Note the difference in the eyeliner and V that Pink mentioned. This little guy is a chick I got from Whitmore Farm. He is 22 weeks old now.

I am sure you checked the sticky on state threads. I did too, and I was surprised that none exists for Wyoming. I am not that close to the Wyo border, but if you can't find any fellow Wyoming-ites - please don't be shy about joining your neighbors to the south. There are a lot of Coloradoans...
Hi New2 - I have read about others using water bottles designed for rabbits/hamsters for chicks. I personally used a bottle with a "chicken nipple" for my chicks. It is similar to the rabbit water bottle - but instead of a ball that rolls up into the tube, a "chicken nipple" has a little metal...
