    White leghorn hen setting?!?

Can this even be possible? She has been in the nesting box all day sitting on an egg. I have never heard of a leghorn becoming broody. She even pecked me when I looked underneath her.

    Concerning dropping

She past away last night. I did a necropsy on her this morning. I believe it was an impacted crawl that had soured. Thank you all for your help (serious sarcasm).

    Concerning dropping

One of my chickens just dropped this. What could be the cause of this? She is acting lethargic. I have had a drop in egg production in my flock, so I know something is wrong. When hubby gets home with the wazine, we will be begin deworming. I also want to start Amprolium right after...

    chicks mysteriously dying

We have lost 4 chicks in the last 48 hours. Nothing seems to be causing this. THey are healthy and active and then we check on them and one will be dead. What could the cause be?

    First Time Incubator Hatch, Help!

I have a hypothosis. I think having chicks already hatched in the incubator helps the chicks still in the eggs break through quicker. It seems to stimulate them. When I leave my chicks in for the whole 24hrs before opening, it seems the next ones hatch quicker, but when I take them out, there...

    First Time Incubator Hatch, Help!

at 24hrs, they are not active enough to touch the heating elements in my hova-bator. I am curious about the taped egg as well!

    First Time Incubator Hatch, Help!

I would only open the incubator up every 24hrs. Any more and you'll run the risk of drying out the membranes on the pipping eggs, which will make it hard for them to break through. Chicks can go 2-3 days without anything to eat, but I would stick with the 24hr rule.

    First Time Incubator Hatch, Help!

That is good to know! I keep liquid bandaid around. I will have to try that as it's better then just tossing the egg.

    Putting different age chicks together

Thank you for the peace of mind! I did put one of the cockerels from the first batch in with the second batch right before they roosted. There was a bit of quibbles from a younger cockerel and him. The younger one is the one that was being mean, but they seemed to work it out pretty quickly...

    Putting different age chicks together

Thank you for the input of putting a larger one in with the smallers. I think I will try that!! I am sure hoping it will be a fit, but am fully ready to do something different if not. I'll post the findings!

    Putting different age chicks together

I incubated them from the current hens and rooster I have now. The parent hens and rooster have a bit of mix in them, and hence do the chicks. They look to have a lot of RIR and Golden Lace in them. They all seem to be pretty mellow. I wonder if I just sent them side by side in their cages...

    First Time Incubator Hatch, Help!

I have no idea. I am just interested to see if taping is successful. I have heard that bacteria can form in the egg and cause problems. I have always just tossed the eggs that had even a hair line crack. I am watching to see what happens with your egg!

At what age do they start roosting?

My roosting bar is about 2 feet off the ground and my 4wk olds are already roosting. I also set them outside at 3 weeks, being in Florida summer weather. Maybe since I set mine out side earlier then most, perhaps that prompts them to roost sooner? My 8wk olds roost on a bar that is around 3ft...

    Putting different age chicks together

I know chickens will peck at smaller weaker chickens, so I haven't put my varying aged chicks together. Here are the dates of hatch for each batch: April 28 May 25 June 26 My question is would it be fine to stick the 1st and 2nd batch together if I put them side by side in their cages for a...

When to move 6 week old chicks outside permanently?

We live in FL, so I am able to move mine out at 3 wks during the summer. I have a heating lamp JUST in case it's unusually cool in the evenings, but have't had to use it as of yet.

    Welsummer or EE Rooster?

Quote: Wow, pretty patterning on her and AMAZING SPURS! I LOVE hens with spurs! Any chance of a close-up of the blue-eyed hen? I just saw this post. I'll get my dd to try and get a pic of Blue-eyes. In response to the other post, I don't think she is a buff orpington. SHe...

Patiently (maybe not completely) waiting for my babies to hatch

Quote: hmmm...I am wondering if something like this was my problem, outside of the lower temps. My numbers were WAY low for what I was expecting. 31 eggs put in. 6 were weeded out due to no growth, blood rings, etc around day 8. That left me with 25 eggs. There were only 4 I couldn't...
