Tarred and feathered...my poor bald chickens!

Nope, no rooster. I feed them Laying crumbles and some (rarely now) table scraps. I have also fed them some canned cat food trying to increase their protein. I am at a loss!

Tarred and feathered...my poor bald chickens!

I don't know if I am battling a molt, disease or a really bored chicken feather picker but I thought it was a molt, checked for mites and have seen the chickens pecking each others feathers out and I don't know what to do about it. I sprayed the affected one's bums with Blue Cote and that...

How do I increase my chicken's protein?

I feed them approximately an equal mix of layer crumbles, hard winter wheat from our farm and scratch grains (the scratch grains because it is winter and cold and I thought they need extra corn for heat). They also get table scraps about every other day or so. I picked through their feathers...

How do I increase my chicken's protein?

My chickens are apparantly picking each other's tail feathers due to low protein. I thought it was molting. Someone on here suggested mites which I checked for and they are all clear. So that leaves picking. How do I increase their intake so they quit that picking? Thanks!

    bald chicken butts help

I googled how to check for mites/lice and went to my coop just now with a flashlight and inspected chicken hineys. They were impressed! I didn't find any bugs, eggs or anything. I wiped under their roosts with a white rag like was stated and didn't find any blood. My chickens are covered in...

My chickens are molting right now so I hope this is part of that but I thought I would pass it by those more knowledgable than me. I have 10 chickens, 4 have really bald butts. They look really really dumb. Yes, there is also a cat in this picture. They are eating left overs and the cat...

Chicken math - what's your story?

I started with 8 chicks, 2 red, 2 white, 2 blue, 2 black (my girls thought it was cool to have different colors) Then my friend said "you don't have any blue eggers" so I went back and got 2 Americaunas-up to 10. One chick died from undetermined causes so down to 9. Then my same friend had a...

Why do my chickens look wet?

I am new to chickens. I have 10 of them and this is my first winter with them. 3 of them look like they have taken a shower and forgot to blowdry their feathers. They have matted looking feathers all down their backs. I picked one up and she isn't wet, just looks like it. What is this...

    New use for turkey carcass

I threw our turkey carcass from thanksgiving out to my chickens and for the last week 1/2 they have been picking on it. I went out today and it is picked clean! Just thought I would post this as more holidays are coming up. (I normally make carcass soup but I forgot it in the fridge!)

    Double yolkers! How fun!

My bet is the red chicken. The white one probably lays white eggs (at least my Red Star lays brown and White Leghorn lays white) One of my white chickens lays double yolkers a lot...poor chicken. Her very first egg was a double yolker.
