    Hatchery chiks ...yes or no?

I've gotten two orders of chicks from Murray McMurray, and I haven't had too many problems. I've noticed that chicks I ordered from a hatchery are less personable than chicks I've hatched out, or chickens I've bought that were hatched and hand reared by someone. I think it's probably the...

    watering baby chicks

My two week old chicks have been drinking happily out of a shallow bowl since they were two days old. So long as they can get their heads over the rim, and it isn't deep enough for them to jump in and get soaked and a chill (or drown), I think it'll work fine. :)

Newly Hatched Chick Might Have Brain Damage?

Oh man. That sounds awful. :( I'm sorry. I'll have to watch him/her like a hawk. I don't want the baby to suffer. I think I'll give it a couple days, see if it ventures out with mom and the others when they leave the coop for the first time, and if it just can't mobilize and keep itself fed...

Newly Hatched Chick Might Have Brain Damage?

This isn't really an emergency, which is why I posted it here instead of the emergencies section. I have a broody who's been hatching eggs out since yesterday. Today I found a leghorn chick that hatched under her and it's staying in a really weird position and won't move out of it. With its legs...

Few Days Old Chick - Some sort of impacted throat? Please help! Pictures! -- Resolved Sort Of

Unfortunately, she didn't make it. But I figured out what the culprit was this morning after she died. She'd gotten a lot of bedding stuck in her throat. Switching over to something not so ingestable.

Few Days Old Chick - Some sort of impacted throat? Please help! Pictures! -- Resolved Sort Of

Actually, no food is coming up. It's a clear liquid. A bit bubbly? And for slicing into it, I'm a little bit afraid I'll hit an air tube or something. How deep would I slice, and where?

    help!!

I had something similar happen to two hens of mine some time ago: I treated mine by flushing it once with sterile saline solution (like for use with eye contacts) to get debris out of it, and keeping them on some minor antibiotics in their water to help fend off infection. Then I kept her...

Additionally: I can't take her to a vet, so I need some home remedy suggestions if any of you have any idea what's going on.

Few Days Old Chick - Some sort of impacted throat? Please help! Pictures! -- Resolved Sort Of

I have a buff orpington chick who's about seven days old. And he/she has been regurgitating and then making gasping motions (beak opening, neck extended) for two days. Today I noticed a bulge under her chin. Large, and kind of hard, with a little give. Additional info: She was pounced on the...

The First Babies Hatched on the Farm - and Lessons I Learned from Them - With Pictures

I hope this is the right section for this! If it's not, I will move it over elsewhere. :) We recently had three hens go broody at once, and we were thrilled at the prospect of babies running around that didn't have to go through the trauma of shipping from a hatchery. Well, two of the broodies...
