Unfortunate update:
2 days ago 2 of my Cochins started swelling around their eyes again. One had the swelling previously - the other had zero symptoms last time. This is about 2 weeks after they went through a 10 day doxy treatment (it is also about 2 weeks after the last bad AQI upstate NY...
I wanted to give a final update on this situation.
All tests from Cornell have come back negative. And by all tests, I mean almost everything you can test for. None of the usual suspects for this sort of symptom - MG or Coryza - were positive. Nothing noteworthy on fecal, blood, nor bacterial...
Thank you for adding this insight. Unfortunately the CA smoke is rolling in again here and we're now in the red (unhealthy). Really hoping it's not going to climb like last time. We have plexi panels we put up in the run in the winter, we put them up to try to cut the particulates some. It's not...
It's a little bizarre. I'm hoping for a conclusion myself because I have 12 week old babies that really do need to be outside - it's been a biosecurity clown car over here since this started.
I would try Jedd's for supplies: https://jedds.com/
Re: doxy
My girls are taking 100mg each per day...
Hi there,
I’m very sorry you are going through this - it’s a bummer. Are there any other symptoms happening?
I don’t have every test result but I do have most of them.
The tests are negative for literally EVERYTHING viral including Mycoplasma - which was a suspect. The outstanding test / one...
Further update since onset for anyone that may be experiencing this:
My girls are on dose #6 of Doxy. All energy, behavior, laying is totally normal still.
They have no eye discharge and never really did - it's just been the inflammation.
No odor either.
It has only ever effected one eye on...
Update:
Traveling vet visit went well. Much more informed / invasive and had all birds looked at. She's a Cornell grad & PhD studies in Mycoplasma.
She does not feel it is avian flu as they seem far too healthy outside the swelling.
(I know this may have seemed like a panic at the disco worry -...
A lot can happen in a year - or in a few days apparently. Ugh.
I got my 2 rounds of girls from Meyer - I've had zero issues & they all arrived happy & healthy both times. There are a gazillion wild birds & wildlife around here - probably enough pathogens to last 4 lifetimes. I still keep...
FWIW everyone is doing ok and isn't appearing stressed - once I get the vet visit over I will know more where to go from here. I understand the social structure. You'd remove a solo sick chicken no matter what. I guess this is sort of doing the opposite. That said, just because they aren't...
Thank you so much.
I ordered Tylosol and Doxy last night.
And more Terramycin ointment
Not the combo, though.
I have Amox here.
Just didn't think it was a first line go to for respiratory.
So is there going to be a dark web black market for chicken drugs now?
How are we suppose to care...
If it is MG - it was mentioned that it is possible the babies brought it in. I did get them from a reputable NPIP hatchery - not some random person. Mind you, they've had almost no interactions with the big girls. There was one face to face with my friendliest hen that lasted about 9 seconds. I...
The struggle is more birds are getting symptoms very rapidly and I don't have anything to treat them all with. I ordered & expedited shipping but still not getting it very soon. The tests could take 7-14 days. I obviously won't double up on testing - but I need to be able to treat somehow sooner...
Thanks for the response. So many variables, I have 5 new babies but they have had almost no contact with my older girls. That said, I have had them in the yard in different areas at the same time. And of course I have worn the same clothes when attending to both. The babies are fine, no symptoms...
Hello. Update. Took one girl to the Vet and ran pretty much every test you can. The Dr had no exact insight. All is being sent to Cornell. 2 more of my girls now have swelling making it 5 out of 8. I would not say it's extreme but it's definitely something. All other behavior / energy is status...
Thank you so much for this response. This is our first rodeo with this and as you know with chickens - it could one of so many things! There are currently no other RD-like symptoms luckily. I did happen to have terramycin ointment and put some on after flushing the eyes with water. That said, it...
Greetings,
2 of my girls out of nowhere are displaying puffy eye lids.
Late discovery today & totally out of nowhere.
Of course I went down the Google rabbit hole and am convinced it might be mycoplasma.
I am calling the Vet first thing in the AM.
Part of my panic is obviously I love them -...
