    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Mine have not been very broody. They'll get a notion in the spring and sit on the nest for up to a week or so , but they get over it pretty quickly and are easily kicked off the nest and forget to go back on. None of mine have gone full on broody. In the winter they will sit on the eggs...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Question for you all.... I have a huge hen that has, to my untrained eye, the perfect comb. It looks like a mini rooster comb. Is this a good or bad trait. BTW she's older now but was a good layer of a nice dark, evenly colored, pointed egg. I know, I know, post a picture. I'll work...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My first batch of birds started laying a little shy of 6 months. The hens started "yelling" at me. I thought "What's their problem?" They began laying shortly after that.

Quote: I got some chicks from Whitmore Farms and am very happy with the results. Will was very nice to deal with. Remember...minimum 25 and plan on half roosters.

Quote: I have a heat lamp over their roost area on mine 24/7 and they are laying fine. Started in October and have been ramping up ever since. This is my first time with layers. I got them in the beginning of June and I thought I would have to wait until spring to get any eggs. I was...

Quote: You did not get unlucky, you got hatchery birds. I think there is a huge difference between hatchery Welsummers and breeder's Welsummers. I know of 2 people locally who got rid of their hatchery Welsummers because they were so flighty (psycho). They couldn't understand why I would...

More egg pics: I noticed on some eggs the color is a little lighter on the pointy end. Anyone else see this and which end comes out first?

EweSheep, Tailfeathers, Lensters...you folks are just great. The best part about living in a small town is kind folks like you. Actualy, I have 10 Welsummers and 2 Marans hens (and 3 Ameraucanas) ...all the same age. The Welsummers grew the fastest, matured the quickest, were sexually...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I had beginners luck...out of 16 Welsummer chicks I got 10 hens. I got 30 chicks total and didn't lose a one. My buddy, who has always gotten hatchery stock, was amazed I didn't lose any. I'm not bragging, it's a tribute to the vigor of private breeders stuff. I'm glad I went that route...

Quote: Actually, I think that you have the same amount of Maran eggs as Wellies in the pictures. The Wellie eggs have a reddish brown color completely through their shell, fairly uniform with some variation or slight speckling allowed, which also carries through the shell. The Marans eggs...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My first Wellie eggs at a little over 5 months. I was a little suprised when they started laying. I figured I had to wait until spring. Great, friendly, vigorous breed. Fastest to grow, first to lay and the first to figure things out. Really good hardy roosters. Definetely the...
