Here is one of my hens with my daughter. Not sure if most are as docile as ours, but even our six year old can pick them up. Hopefully their molt will end soon and we will have some nice eggs again.
How long do welsummers typically lay? I acquired 2 recently (a Christmas present) and learned they are 3-4 years old. One was laying about 3 a week for a couple of weeks and then one of my dogs decided to dig through the run and coop and "play" with them. Feathers are back, all is fine now, but...
Here is another pic of one of our eggs. They are what I would call terra cotta and have small dark speckles on them usually. They are not super dark, but aren't light either. In my eyes, they are the perfect brown, but again I do not show or breed. Just eat them :)
First, I tried "googling it" to no real avail. I'm a newbie and don't understand what you mean by pillows. My girls probably have them, not show quality, but I have no rooster, so no worries. Do you mean their cute fluffy rears? Just curious if my have pillows or not.
Thanks :)
Does she/he look like they are wearing eyeliner? Girls have dark lines around eyes and a more defined/prominent v on the head. Boys typically have a more fuzzy v/patterning when chicks.
My girls. They did have a bit of a rough month - my dogs decided to dig under both the fence and the coop to play, but both recovered (photo of both is a week after the unwelcome play date).
So glad to have found this group! I have two welsummer hens and they too aren't laying. One lays one or two eggs a week, but the other has only layed one egg this month. I'm hoping in feb. With a little longer day they will lay more, and I'll get at least 4 eggs a week :) lol.
Also, if anyone...
