    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks for explaining this faykoko! The third roo had salmon colored chest feathers after his down mottled off, and now with the recent newer feathers (he's 9wks) his chest feathers are all reddish-brown. Yes, he and his brothers have a future date w/ freezer camp, so no possibility of...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hi everyone! Am totally new to chicken genetics - so am asking out of curiosity and breeding purpose (of course ), but how does one obtain a roo with blacker chest feathers? It's the father roo who passes this gene, right? I have a roo with 60% black & 40% brown chest feathers, and hatched...

faykokoWV and bwalden - thanks for your replies! Yes, the logistics of breeding to SOP and darker eggs is where I'd like to attain to one day; for the moment, I enjoy them and their eggs.

How long is a laying cycle? So if one were to incubate, then it's not necessary to choose darker (early in the laying cycle) eggs?

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Sigh.... you've just confirmed my fears - knew I'd have to cull him. It's just him and a sister hen with the white tips. But am surprised that it's a dominate gene; would have thought it was recessive.

Hens and Roos & faykokoWV - thanks for your replies and advice; it's totally appreciated. From my new flock - there are 2 with white tipped feathers, a hen and a roo. They are both approaching 12wks old, so maybe these feathers will fall out in the near future. One can only hope. And yes...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Speaking of eggs, does the egg size get larger as the hens get older and lays more? Or hens will always lay large eggs because they're large fowl type? Just curious as I was advised to put oyster shell in my flocks' feed since they will be 12wks old in a few days. Also okay for roos to...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Check out the WCNA site- Welsummer Club of NA. There are breeders listed there that send chicks a/o eggs. I'm west coast, but got my chicks from the east coast and they all arrived in perfect condition... the transit time was nerve-racking but that's moot.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Ah ha!! Thx - you just confirmed my suspicions re: pinfeathers. And yes, they might have been too crowded.... am moving them slowly out of brooder into their coop this weekend since they've outgrown it. (I'm limited in attaching a picture- maybe not enough posts or something...)

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Royce, Thanks for taking the time to do this, as I'm sure it's no small feat. I've got a good handful of 3wk old chicks that started losing some of the feather on their backs.... someone advised me Vaseline for prevention of pecking..... but in looking them over, I just see dry skin and new...
