    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

The feather stubs were on some of my birds, not new2chooks' birds. I should add that those weren't from Bargain's eggs. I didn't have that problem with her birds. But I know that it is a problem! A terrible problem. My pet peeve. Yuck, feather stubs!

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Fiesty is a tad bit off color. I think I'd like that. It would help me to tell her apart from the others. I put a lot of stock in good egg color myself. She might not win in the show ring, but if she lays lovely eggs, what's the harm? You never know, she might throw perfectly colored chicks...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I've gotten fertile eggs from hens in with a 13 week old roo before. I was pretty surprised. (I'm sure they were, too.) Anyway, Go Moose!

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Yes, we do love all the pictures! I never get tired of looking at Welsummer pics. I meant to take some new ones before our current foot of snow fell, but it didn't happen. Maybe next week...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I hope today is better, too. I sorta integrated my 18 week old Wellie pullets yesterday. They were missing their rooster, who was a hatch mate, and is currently servicing the laying flock. It was the funniest thing, when I sold off that last extra roo, they were so sad. That hatch was very...

Quote: They are really growing up! I know what you mean about the pictures not doing Moose justice. I've had a hard time getting good photos at all lately due to the sun's angle. At any rate, Moose is a cutie! So is Fiesty. I hope the integration went well.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

The one the (adorable) little girl is holding is a pullet. No doubt about it. The ones in the first 2 pics look like cockerels to me. Compare them all to the one that is definitely a girl. Note the light reddish-brown of her breast, and the way that she doesn't have much going on in the...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Look at their breasts. Normally the boys will have black on the breast, usually starting on the outside and working in toward the center. The girls will have brown breasts. You could also post pictures, and get expert opinions. We love pictures!

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks for the compliments! And yes, more pics! I love looking at everyone's Wellies. Especially the roos. I've never been a big fan of roos in general, but I find myself absolutely in love with my Welsummer roos. Here's what I've noticed with my older Welsummer hens. They do seem thin...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

And then from the other pen, these kids are 15 weeks old. The breasts on these girls are so dark! They are just lovely! Their little roo wasn't in the mood for picture-taking, unfortunately. He's a real looker, too. He has the clearest hackles... But that is useless info without a...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

We haven't had any pictures posted for a while, and my babies are growing so fast! These guys are 17 weeks old. Roo #1 (He loves the camera!) And Roo #2 (The camera-shy one...) And one of the girls from that group.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Awww. I hate that 2 fully formed, but didn't hatch. That must have been such a disappointment! I never have the nerve to open an egg that didn't hatch. I just pretend like they weren't fertile or something. At any rate, good for you with the three that you did get. They are lovely!

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Quote: Ah, must be the pic on my computer. I couldn't see that. Now I got another questions. I just saw something else in that pic. What in the world is that long orange thing your Wellie pullet is eating???? God Bless, Tailfeathers, That's pumpkin. The stringy mess that's inside the...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Quote: Lauralou, what is the bird pictured at 3 o'clock with the golden hackles? God Bless, That's Blondie, the broody Buff Orp. She hatched six of those ten babies. And still guards them jealously against all threats, real or imagined. (pinkchick, I'm so sad for your loss....)

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I love looking at pics of everybody's birds, too. And if you meant my birds in particular, then I'm incredibly flattered! Unfortunately, it was a terrible day for picture taking, what with the low angle of the winter sun and the glare off all the snow. I only got a few that were passable...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

It's never too late to share pics! Are those the only 3 you had hatch from bargain's eggs? If so, you were very lucky to get 2 girls and a boy! I had 9 hatch from her eggs, but I got 3 girls and 6 boys. I culled 2 boys very early. Then I spent Christmas Eve out in that pen, trying to...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Feedstorechick, I have a little cockerel right now who used to have a red chest like yours. As he has grown, the color has changed. He has darker feathers growing in from the sides, and a red stripe down the middle. I'm thinking that he will end up with a black chest. Not mottled, but...
