Shasta nudged him with her nose and whimpered. Suddenly, there was a sharp pain on her hide leg. She turned around and gnawed at it. After a moment she decided she had simply pulled a muscle.
Shasta backed out of the log and checked for the bear. The steam that formed a small cloud when she breathed made it a bit hard for her to see, so she relied on her nose. When she was sure he was gone, she crawled back into the log and nudged Joe with her nose.
Shasta made a u-turn and went back to Joe. She picked him up liked a pup in her mouth and darted the opposite direction the bear was running. Running in a zig-zag pattern, she bolted under branches and bounded over logs. She jumped over one, then turned and crawled inside, letting go of Joe.
