Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Exciting! So are you going to save the egg till you get more, or are you going to cook the lone egg? How old are your girls now?

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Well at least you found them a great place to live. As a duck, what could be better than a giant pond?

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

I was sad to read that you're getting rid of the ducks. If you had gotten the right ducks do you think they'd have a different personality or that you would have liked them more? We've decided to get ducks next year, when we have time to build a pond, and I really like the look of the khaki...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Well, it stinks poor Pecker was being picked on, but hopefully he lives a long happy life. I was a little sad at the thought of him being dinner. I was wondering the impact on the rest of your flock? Since Pecker obviously kept them in line, how long is it going to take one of the females to...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

This is a thread about using Sweet PDZ in the coop and run, for odor control. I found it helpful that so many people have talked about it, and switched. I checked Big R and they have it at a great price...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Oh! Here's something I was wondering, in reference to the grapes. I see you have blocks around the bottom, and I was wondering if the chickens have figured out to use them to get higher? I have a ton of two foot sections we took off the posts we used on our fence, and I thought those pieces are...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Yes, that was very helpful. We'll be using a field grass, that I'm going to add a clover mix to. I'm hoping it'll stand up to this horrible drought, and the chickens. I lived here 9 years ago, during the last year of my husband being a Marine, and his transition into the Air Force...it was...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Something people complain a lot about is chickens tearing up the lawn. Have you found this to be a problem, or are you getting any problem spots? And with your grape vines, are they still growing well, even with the extra chick attention? I'm really looking forward to "remaking" our backyard...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

So will Pecker be living in South Dakota, or......? We just got our chicks, and I'm pretty sure if one turned out to be a Roo, I'd convince my husband to let him stay. We're lucky there's no ban on them here, but he really doesn't want a male anytime soon. We ordered seven, but only six ended...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Well after reading your whole thread and seeing your coop and run, I would say they feel perfectly safe in their home. We just moved into a "community" with 2.5 acre lots and there are two Hawks that just sit on our back fence posts. I've never been worried about my two Bostons till yesterday...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

From what I've read ducks tend to prefer more open space. Some would even like to just sleep in their water, or a tree. Maybe you could try their own open pen inside the run? If they liked their sleeping area more they might be more willing to go in at night. I've really enjoyed reading your posts.
