It's a different, and difficult, decision for everyone. If they had improved by today (48 hours after hatch, 72 hours after they were supposed to hatch), I'd have kept them of course.
I had one a couple of months ago that had one leg out to the side, like spraddle leg but it was only one leg...
We culled Mutt and Jeff this afternoon. They were not improving. Lively, alert, pooping, and eating whatever I forced into them with a medicine dropper - but still falling over to their right sides, and onto their backs. Their legs were strong, so it wasn't a matter of weakness. I'd tried...
How's the baby? Did it make it?
You know, there are tips somewhere on this site about how to correct a prolapsed navel on newly hatched chicks - generally by sterilizing the site, pushing everything back into the abdomen with a Q-tip, and either sealing the opening with glue or just treating...
Meet Mutt and Jeff.
These are the last two chicks of my "Dumpling" group that had trouble hatching yesterday, and had to have a full assist. They had externally pipped on schedule, but after 24 hours of no progress, I started the assist over a period of the next 12-14 hours a little at a time...
Nearing the end of this hatch, finally, with mixed feelings.
I've got two still in the incubator that are struggling to survive. The blood vessels just do NOT want to dry up! All 30 other chicks were finished by this morning and are doing fine. These last two looked ready, pipped more than 24...
Here's my hatch day update: So far, I have 15 little dumplings in the brooder and all are doing GOOD! :wee There are 14 more at various stages of pip and zip, and 8 more who have yet to join the party.
Sadly, Dumpling #24 was removed to the fire barrel outside just before it exploded. I had...
Dumpling #2 and #3 are out now, too - and seven more are externally pipped! My my my going to be a busy night I think!
Just came from handling an incubator emergency in the middle of it all. Hopefully I didn't keep the eggs out for too long! While checking pips and zips, I noticed some of the...
Meet Dumpling #1! Two more zipping along right now...., five more have pipped --- all a day early!
I've never even guessed of sexing a chick at 1 hour old by his comb, but I think this BOY leaves no doubt, eh? :jumpy
Here we go........ TWO have pipped so far, of 39! Baile feliz!

Preparing for lockdown, everyone! I candled two nights ago, and all is well with all 39 eggs. Fingers crossed still! Hatch is due to start Thursday, May 4th and hopefully finish on Friday, May 5th. Candling one more time tomorrow night, then lockdown!
Anybody else have an update?
I'm bringing...
Well, why not? I'm game for anything yummy you can share!
Besides, add a dollop of salsa, avocado slices, lime juice, chili peppers, frijoles (beans), or tortillas and I can fake Mexican food! :lau:drool
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for "Fifth of May." Like @Hedgeland Farms said, the holiday celebrates Mexico's victory over the French. From a different article:
https://www.today.com/popculture/cinco-de-mayo-what-it-how-celebrate-t153321
"People in the U.S. often mistake Cinco de Mayo for Mexico's...
I checked my copy of the Hubbard Incubation Guide for any references to embryo mortality related to variation of temperature in the incubator, and found only one - as one of the several possible causes of "navel not closed, dry fluff." But it did not say how much variation, how long, or what...
From my viewpoint, the only purpose of candling is to remove dead eggs that could potentially leak bacteria and/or explode. Therefore, I think no more often than every 5-7 days would be needed. LESS is better. The more you open the incubator, the more you cause fluctuations to humidity and...
My eggs are from an established flock of 2-3-yr-old barnyard mixes (RIR, BPR, and Black Australorp mostly; and I've had one each of EE, Araucana, and Leghorn in the mix). One 3-yr-old roo who does most of the business, one 1-year-old who mostly mates with the younger first-time layers (and I...
I have two I'm using at the same time, same schedule. I find that my chicks still hatch at the same rate in either one:
The Kebonnixs 12-egg incubator...
