While I'd love to see you go with a private breeder over a hatchery for many reasons, (either me or someone else), I have heard that McMurray's line of PR's have an attitude problem. Mean roos.. At one time I had PR's from Mt. Healthy, and they were nice, big birds. Ive heard several folks say...

I think there are 2 girls in those pics.. I have 3 total, and the 2 boys. All 3 girls are very similar.. great size too.. Just letting the boys grow out now before I decide who will get to enjoy the breeding pen in February Will try to get a fluffy butt shot.

Here's some pics of my gang.. just put them on the Plymouth Rock thread but figured I'd stick them here too. Would love any input on color/type/etc. Wish the boys were a little darker in the hackles. But overall I'm pleased.. especially with the girls!!

I don't think they're on any endangered lists, but I think there is definitely a shortage of really excellent birds. Hatcheries still carry them (although, like most hatcheries, the birds aren't always to standard), but there are several private breeders with nice stock throughout the US. Joel...

Thanks Cybercat! Yeah, he's my favorite too. You can see the minor shank feathering in a few of them, it only seemed to show up 2 months or so ago. Bummer. Pic 3 bird is also on the right in pic 4 and 5, he's not too terribly awful I don't think... I wasn't too thrilled with the coloring on...

Hi all, I've got 5 roos, and would like to bring my stock down to 2. I have a pretty good idea of who will be going, but I wanted to get some other eyes on these guys. You'll see one below with fairly light shanks (pic 7), 2 actually have minor tiny tiny shank feathers (one of which has an...

Thanks! 2 of them have hackles that are definitely not the rich burgundy I've been seeing.. they're more golden in color. Don't know if that would be an immediate cull or not, or if that will change. One of them has much lighter shanks than the others. I was going to take good pics of everyone...

Can anyone direct me to a good description of the correct partridge coloring for these guys? I've been studying the general rock standard, but I'm trying to narrow down my rooster pool to a few that I'd like to keep. I know with the pullets I need to wait until after the first molt to really...

I've got 17 6-10 week olds, including a few from Joel Gilman.. they're looking great! I'll post pics as soon as I get back from vacation next week. Some are already showing some great feathering. Of the 17, it looks like I've got 7 cockerels. Joel's birds are super sweet, the rest are still...

Quote: That's really interesting.. when I get my Mt. Healthy order (6 pullets, 1 cockerel) I'll be banding them so I can tell them apart from Joels. Will be interesting to watch for similarities/differences. They'll be arriving next week.

Impressive rooster! I got some PR chicks from Joel that day as well.. he invited me over to chat chicken at some point soon, I live just up the road from him. I'm also ordering a few from Mt. Healthy, I hear they have nice PR's.
