Historic Presence of Jungle Fowl in the American Deep South

Amazing how much confusion one man can cause. It would make most sense to me that McGinnis kept his real Blueface at his home site? I find it very interesting how old time cockers would free range their stock on farmers property. I would imagine that would spark interests with some...

Wow! That's a lot of awesome research you did there! ... I really enjoyed reading that, thanks. I'm not sure what else to add to this I haven't looked into it enough, but the more I learn the more interesting it is. Also I may order some blueface hatching of ebay, will see.

Historic Presence of Jungle Fowl in the American Deep South

Leads me to think that there may have been a cracker breed that was passed around Florida farmsteads. It's possible His childhood birds could have been related to your grandfather's stock . It wasn't uncommon for farmers of those days to pass around animals and goods throughout the...

We use to have a dog.. but... The neighbors train police dogs and they can be aggressive animals. My dog would bark at the trainers and some of them were the picky type of people to say the least. So I got rid of him before I made any enemies.

No, we don't have a dog or have I seen one around. The way I designed the roosts is the attacker would have to climb almost upside down on a two by four at a 140 degree angle to get to the birds. The only animal I can think of that would be able to pull that move off would be a raccoon...

Where did you read about the natural selection of colors in the batams? By the way , very nice birds!. In the future years it will be interesting to see what your birds turn out to be . Unfortunately with my birds I recently lost four hens and a rooster in one night. They were sleeping up 7ft...

That's pretty much how the farmer kept my birds and what I plan on doing . You mentioned on another thread that you were going to try selectively breeding for red jungle fowl coloration on a 40 acre farm. Natural selection may or may not select for those colors even though you might think it...

That's great results! I wish mine would do that well. This time around I'm definitely going to try useing a dog crate. I think the last time where I messed up would be I let the mother take the baby's up in the trees at 6 weeks old. I figured it would be ok considering she had those baby's...

Historic Presence of Jungle Fowl in the American Deep South

Ya most likely not, That's what is left of the family farms here too. Not much you can do there . It would be cool if he still had some of his dads birds . When you get the flock large enough thats when most of the natural selective breeding comes in from predators. For my flock If don't...

when I was at tractor supply I wasn't sure exactly what I was looking for in the assorted breeds so I just grabbed what looked closest to a jungle fowl. I searched all the breeds that were in the mix when I got home and identified my chicks are silver duck wing. I don't know how wild they are...

I believe there's a connection too.. To me your birds look like a jungle fowl hybrid that at one point have been crossed with a strain of OEGB. That would explain the varying in leg coloring. I read somewhere that when a hatchery received a red jungle fowl bird from a breeder because...

Historic Presence of Jungle Fowl in the American Deep South

thanks for the good advice! You guys are very knowledgeable .I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I did end up getting some game bantams because the kids really wanted them . I plan on keeping them locked up until they are older though. If I do let them free range I will keep a close...

Historic Presence of Jungle Fowl in the American Deep South

Yes they are bantams.. I could not decide between black, red pyle, or silver duck wing? My birds are currently roosting high up in a barn to avoid owls.... I have some 11 new eggs under one of my hens right now. You would recommend old English game? You would recommend I looking for...

Historic Presence of Jungle Fowl in the American Deep South

I'm going to tractor supply today and they said that they have a cage of mixed breeds that I can pick thro.. Every ones opinion will be considered . Out of these breeds which one would be the best candidate to add new blood to my feral flock of chickens.. • Silver Duckwing Old English •...
