WOW! That is an amazing story @Dmontgomery. The only things my flock have chased are a woodchuck and a skunk. Maybe you could hire them out for predator control and make them earn their keep. Migratory hawks here and also an increase in foxes and coyotes. Lost a couple of females...

Oh keep me posted. We are just minutes away from the canal. I think that route goes through the Barge Canal too and there are places for boats to tie up with restaurants along the way. Would love to meet you if it works out!

I am impressed by your ability to adjust to your new lifestyle - from farm to boat - and appreciated reading your thoughts on the similarities between the two. Perhaps we are all agrarian at our core - hunters and gathers one and all. Interesting perspective and you are right, there are...

I didn't get around to taking any pictures during the day, but got these few Just Before Sunset. You can see the Keets being ignored by their mother! My neighbor has guineas and at this point it looks like a group of seven males. They come up to visit every morning in hopes of getting my young...

How long in the season do your guineas lay there? Mine usually stop by the second week in October, but they are still laying now and I'm sure if given the chance to get some accumulated in a nest, they would go broody and try to hatch them. Good to hear from Guineapeeps, as she has a wealth of...

I occasionally have physical aggression between the males. It's worse if they can pin one down like in a confined space. I have had to remove males and doctor them a bit (they look like prize fighters) before reintroducing them to the flock. Sometimes they work it out and sometimes I have to...

thanks for sharing! What an amazing photo. I wonder if she picked up a few stragglers for a swim. I can't believe she hatched all of those on her own. Maybe she is the swim coach. ha! Thank you for sharing your hatching experiences as well. I miss your postings. Are you sure you...

Ha! Like the DOWN to 62 birds. Sorry to hear about your wife's nephew losing all those birds. Had loss to take all at once. But it sounds like he made out okay with the lucky laying pullet! Not so lucky for the obnoxious rooster. Sold all my extra guineas. Have a couple of broody chickens...

They are looking great developmentally, so whatever you did worked. My neighbor has a flock and never feeds them high protein. They start out small and then seem to catch up to mine. Not sure of the long term effects. Most of ours don't live that long with all the predators. :hit Thanks...

Oh they are developing nicely! :ya It's fun to watch them grow up, change and figure out who's who. Thanks for the pics.

@DoeAndGander Thanks for sharing and I'm happy you found a solution for your fur baby. :love Our last female had incontinent issues and was on medication for the same reason you mentioned. Unfortunately, I think this one's problem is more related to her temperament, lack of housetraining...

In general with your own fertile eggs, at least an 85% hatch rate should be expected. In most cases, it will be higher than that.

Oh Yay! Congrats on the hatchings. Don't you just love their chipmunk stripes and little orange legs? Adorable and thanks for sharing!

Ok... ONLY shouldn't go in front of 4' when you're talking about a snake! Yikes! Good for Gertrude and I'm glad you were able to take care of it, before it could do any damage. The new dog is making good adjustments - especially after being in a shelter for 9 months out of her 2 year old...

OMG - don't get into another coop and flock! Smart move! I think it's great that he visits you a la golf cart. Yes, between the birds and the new dog, I never know what crazy things we're going to be dealing with. I'll let you know about that hatchlings. I may have to pull the keets so...

@Dmontgomery what great photos you posted! Thanks for sharing. Very sorry to hear about your predator situation. It's tough losing them, especially when they hatched there at the homestead. You want them to always be there and be safe. Unfortunately, we'll never fully get rid of the...
