BUT.... sooooo TRUE!!! And don't trust the little glass therm it comes with either. I cooked eggs for a few months in there. Then I bought a digital off of Amazon and stuck it in there, had to adjust it to the new therm... AND... cooked them even hotter!! I had no idea! That therm was off...

Well, yeah, that is the pits. I did candle about 3 of them, and one of them had died and you described what I saw perfectly. Sigh. I should probably candle the rest, but I was disappointed, so I stopped. Figure I'll candle the rest tonight or tomorrow. I was already down to 8, and now I'm...

Yeah, they'll be fine and get around great. :) I haven't candled my eggs-- I'm too scared now! LOL They are my shipped eggs and I figure the less I handle them, the better. Their air sacs are all loose. But I do want to check a few of them to see if they are okay thru that low temp the...

Ahhhh, a cochin!! Okay, and if you read up on this brachdactyly, you'll see that often the heavier feathered the leg and feet are, the higher the chances of having chicks hatch with missing toenails and the 4th digit. I know it is an often talked about subject with silkie breeders.... how to...

I just put in a dripping wet (warm water) paper towel and it jumps it right up to 70-72% almost immediately! I put it right into the tray with the eggs.

I spike my humidity with sopping wet (warm) paper towels in the tray. I bet your towel will stay wet longer than my paper towels, though. :)

Actually, I know what that is! It is called brachydactyly (is the By gene, and which means the reduction in length of the fourth digit, either missing a toenail or missing knuckles). Ptilopody (which is the feather leg-- replacement of scales for feathers on the legs) --- well the shortened...

Thanks everyone! I have the machine running steady since last night now. Still looking good this morning. What a scare! I came home to find it so low and I was just in a panic! I think they will be okay, I have a staggered hatch in there and a chick hatched early this morning-- I woke up and...

THE Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco Thread; Hatches, etc. (PICS)

good call!! I noticed that instead of being too hot, now I'm too cool. I've hatched many times in my Brinsea Eco so far and not had these troubles. WHY now?? Anyway, I got it adjusted back and all is well, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it from now on. Sigh. ETA: BTW, my temp dipped...

no idea, but I've noticed a trend like that too! It seems that for days I will slowly back off the heat and it won't budge under 99.8-100. I'm not happy about it, but don't know what else to do. I pay close attention to my temps, so that's a great question. Perhaps all the warm bodies are...

Second chick ever to hatch in my incubator! :) (silkie) Question, does anyone do staggered hatches in their brinsea and if so... how do you go about it? I don't have a separate incubator to hatch in.

I did the same and read thru the thread. There doesn't seem to be many people on here anymore. I've probably no more knowledge than you, but I can tell you what I read! In the Brinsea manual-- it shows that the big end of the eggs go up-- the little pointy end goes down. Apparently, the air...

Okay, since I am sick today and laying around, I went and read thru the entire thread. Lots of great info, and learned a lot. I went to Amazon and ordered a temp/RH reader that is supposed to be for humidors, but had excellent reviews and can be salt calibrated. I knew nothing about this! So...

Hello everyone! I'm just going to jump in here. I have NO clue what I'm doing. ;) I just got the Brinsea Oct 20 and I'm collecting my silkie eggs and so far only have two-- they just started laying. (I have a trio I'm collecting from) But the last several eggs we ate from them had...
