Depends on quite a few factors, but in general you look at chick behavior rather than a thermometer. Here's the big thread of info: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/956958/mama-heating-pad-in-the-brooder-picture-heavy-update
Correcting bad rooster behavior is an active process...ignoring it just indicates to him that he's won. There's a lot of info on how to prevent bad rooster behavior (or correct it if it occurs) on the forum if you do a search. I read up beforehand since I knew I was keeping multiple Roos--when...
Layer has too much calcium for a rooster long-term. Unless you plan on eating him fairly soon, best option is an "all flock" food while providing supplemental calcium to the ladies (usually people offer oyster shell or calcitic limestone grit).
Very pretty! I was getting a blue egg, but not now as the mini-molt has dropped egg production drastically. Have seen some signs of recovery though. Apparently they'll get those white calcium streaks/spots back when they resume laying and I've had two eggs with them now.
Gearing up to start...
At least everybody seems to be doing it at once. I caught up one of my girls to make sure...yep, new feathers coming in everywhere. Picked up some "Feather Fixer" feed at the store instead of layer. It was only a few dollars more per bag and I've heard good things. Will likely make sure...
Congratulations!
I wouldn't change things up yet. It could definitely have been a mistake or could have been scratched out of the box after being laid.
You should always check for eggs now, but don't expect them? Even if you get several pullets laying, there may be a time when all their...
With the light decreasing, it's getting to be the wrong time of year for them to start laying. If you can add light to the coop, you might be able to overcome it by putting a light on a timer to provide the additional...add the extra time onto the morning so they coop up properly at night. It...
Well, I had a cockerel chick that was trying to mate his fellow chicks at 2 weeks old. Or it could be a bit of dominance play among the chicks. Keep an eye on it, but I don't think it's anything to worry about yet.
*facepalm*
Soooo....been getting these eggs that are smallish but have a really hard shell in the nesting boxes. For months. Today I just figured out that they're guinea eggs. Thought they were part of the pullet egg spectrum of weird eggs.
How did I figure this out?
Last night one of...
Try putting one of your older girls in with the newbies in their divided run instead. Then she'll be outnumbered. Once she's accepted them, add another one. Integrate the whole flock together once you have enough of the older girls okay with it as you feel comfortable. There will be fighting...

Somebody knocked the top off the 5 gallon bucket waterer in the grow-out pen...so of course a 3 month old Crested Cream Legbar cockerel jumped in and drowned himself.

Thanks. It's kinda expected as your number of birds goes up, but I'm a bit sad that the bad luck seems to be targeting my favorites.
I have a Sicilian Buttercup pullet that is named Polly because every time I go out into the yard with anything resembling a feed bucket, she's flying up to land...
My most dominant roo is a bantam olive egger named "Britches" because he acts too big for his! He actually got a Light Brahma roo three times his size to pass out in a submissive posture after chasing him all around the yard one hot day...thought he had killed him when he didn't get up! No...
It's been a while since I've visited, I've been so busy! Just finished a major cleaning of all the poultry areas. Plus constructed actual roosts for my two layer pens instead of having 2x4s propped up on whatever was handy. Finally got some fruit trees planted that I've had for at least 2-3...
