Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

The temp control for the kennel pads looks like a 1950s electric blanket dial...

@rottlady Could you give us a link to the regulator?

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

No, not a quality control issue. It is an issue of not having provided the temperature controller option to the US market. They were always made to be used with a controller.

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

It seems, if you read through more on this thread, that not all of them are set very hot. I can't verify that because I haven't felt any of the other folks heat plates. But I know mine is WAY TOO HOT for a chick to try to push up against without the heat modification. Have you ever tried...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Use a lamp dimmer with it and dial it down to a reasonable temperature. These were designed to be used with a temperature regulator that they don't make for the US yet. Some of the plates are extremely hot to the touch. Mine is. And I use a lamp dimmer with it setting it where it it...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

When I first turn my plate on without the dimmer, I let it heat up and get an idea of how hot it is to the touch. Since they have to be able to touch the plate, I go by the feel. If I'm not able to put my hand on it and keep it there without it being too hot, I use the dimmer to regulate it...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

One thing I did have to do... I had to get a lamp dimmer switch to turn the heat down. The plate I got was too hot for chicks to touch. The unit is designed to be used with a switch cord that's similar to a lamp dimmer cord. They don't make them for US electric current yet therefore they're...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

The top doesn't get much heat so the cling wrap is okay. I'm a stickler for being careful about fumes. The item itself puts out some. I ended up NOT continuing to use the cling wrap because it does get moved a bit and I don't like it getting scrunched up and becoming a draw to the attention...

@Darchangel Farm Can you post what kind of rheostats your husband used so folks on the thread can see? And... Poland has a temperature controller

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

PS: I just do the slide by feel. I let it get warmed up then put my hand on it to feel how hot it is. I just keep it at a comfortable temperature for my hand pressed up against it. If it's really cold out I may put it a little warmer but not much. And if it's really warm out I usually...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

@Darchangel Farm The manufacturer is in Poland, I believe. They make a temperature control for the units that is similar to the lamp dimmer cords. They don't make them, however, for US electricity at this point. Now it stands to reason that if there is a temperature controller, there is a...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I don't think it will work with chicks. The heat mats are based on weight/contact. A chick has almost no "weight". It all depends on how much "weight" it takes against the mat. ETA: Do an experiment. Turn on the heat mat and lay it on some thing - like 2 bricks on either side - that...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

If mine was like that, I wouldn't worry about using a dimmer. And setting one side lower and one side higher is something that was suggested way back on this thread that I did after reading about it too. That also gives a variation of areas they can go in. Even with the dimmer on mine, the...
