Chickens will not starve them self to death. Are they out free ranging during the day? I wouldn't worry about it, just try feeding them once a day for a while.
That does sound like a good diet but I have a question. Why don't you just ferment the feed also? Pellets ferment just as good as any other food. I do things the opposite of you, I ferment their food and toss out the scratch plane :-) whatever works for somebody is what you have to do but maybe...
I had a chance to spend five weeks in New Zeeland and Australia when I was on the Winter Park disabled ski team. I still kick myself that I did not take that trip. It is going to be 108° here a few days this coming week so I would love to have frost on the ground.
My dog loved the fermented feed. My cats would eat it also. Are use the one bucket method, keep it at oatmeal consistency, add more feed and water when it starts to get low or too strong. My 5 gallon bucket was too big, I only have 12 chickens. So I went to the grocery store and got a 3 gallon...
I have used the chip and dip platter's also. They do work well. And I used vinyl gutters between cinderblocks. Extremely easy. No tools required :-) I would post a picture but I can't figure out how to do it now that they've change things. Basically just set the cinderblocks up on their end and...
Here's a picture of a feeder I saw that I think would work well. I use something like this but just without the top rail. I just put a piece of vinyl gutter between two cinderblocks, my chickens don't tend to try to stand in it.
I do take care of my birds overall nutrition. Thank you very much. And the food are use is a grower feed so it has extra protein in it. Scratches a treat that I give in the evenings during the winter. Just glad to know that experts like you were out there.
The scratch does include corn, but also other whole grains and black oil sunflower seeds. There's also dried mealworms and soldier fly larvae in it. This gives more protein and more calories because they burn more calories in the winter. And digesting the greens helps keep them warm, at least...
All the calculations can start getting complicated when there are variables such as different ages of chickens, whether such as extreme cold and snow, types of food etc. When it is this cold and all the snow I feed them as much as they want. I feed them FF twice a day and a couple handfuls of...
I remember seeing videos that gave all kinds of interesting information. But when I finally found The "TickTock" site then I knew I had found the easy and best way to do fermented feed.
They aren't going to gain any weight with the veggies. Just feed the flock raiser with oyster shell on the side and call it good. You're supplementing with so many other things they're losing the benefit of the chicken feed. Black oil sunflower seeds have some fat in them which should help them...
With all your birds being different ages etc. I would feed a grower pellet or flock raiser type food. You can put oyster shell on the side for the ones that will need it. Try some Black oil sunflower seeds also as treats.
