    Hypothermia?

Our Girls scratching about in their new home, giving us much joy and yummy eggs! There is Reba the RI Red, Patsy the Brown Leghorn, Wynonna the Golden Laced Wyndotte (I think you can see a name pattern here...) and Loretta the Silver Laced Red Wyndotte (or perhaps it is a Silver red Laced?)...

    Hypothermia?

Hello April,, I unfortunately do not have the packaging, and it was "on loan" from our work in the banquet department, they are used on buffet lines to keep food warm...It was a red bulb. We can however chec out the store room for more and see where that leads. I am all for awareness! I cannot...

    Hypothermia?

I need to get home in the daylight, my husband and I both work full time so we miss a lot of daylight at home. They are settling in fine though, and seem to be happy!

    Hypothermia?

Got it! It is unusual for it to hit -10 at our place, but wind can be an issue. My husband and I discussed putting up wind breaks to avoid that issue, bales of hay on the outside of the fenced enclosure should work fine. Thanks again!

I will post pics soon! And I will be a label reader from now on, but is there EVER a time for use of a Heat lamp? (teflon free of course)

    Hypothermia?

Well, the verdict is in...Beekissed, you were right. I am beside myself with the thought that these sweet little ladies trusted me to take care of them, and I literally loved them to death. The OSU doc was very happy to have the information that you had supplied, and will add that to his...

    Hypothermia?

For comparisons sake, this is the coop that I purchased. Hopefully the link will work. I bought the biggest one he had available, and had 14 birds at peak http://chickengardener.com/gableroofcoops

    Hypothermia?

Yes, I feel much more informed, and much more confident about moving forward, I will move on from the guilt I feel, and concentrate on correcting my mistakes. Sweet birds, all named and loved individually. Hard to accept that is was my doing.

    Hypothermia?

Thank you so much, I will take a step back, evaluate, change the environment to suit the number of birds we wish to have with a new coop if need be, and await further response from OSU, but given what you have said and your (from what I can tell) extensive knowledge of raising chickens, it is a...

    Hypothermia?

Unfortunately I am the product of doing too much reading. All of the premade coops I was looking at all had about the same space per bird ratio, as long as there was an outside area that they could roam around and spread their wings so to speak. I have two pretty decently rated books that i read...

    Hypothermia?

We did not supplement the grit except for oyster shell when they were beginning to lay. we have started that with the Rooster now. They did not think that was the cause of death, more of an observation.

    Hypothermia?

So far the results are inconclusive. All three that were examined had impacted crops, absolutely no grit in them which is strange as we feed scratch on the ground, and they free range occasionally. There was also a mass of fibrous material in the crop that was not identified, we are waiting to...

    Hypothermia?

They were not close to the lamp except one. The lamp is rather non-descript. Happily Elvis is crowing this morning, looks great and enjoying his new home in the barn until we get results from OSU. They are confident they will be able to solve this for us so we can make plans to regroup

    Hypothermia?

We will definitely look at that. We get our lamps from the feed store, so we assume it is safe, but good advice to always double check!

    Hypothermia?

We have taken Kathy's advise and will be sending three chickens to OSU for analysis. It wasn't as expensive as we thought, and we need to know before we proceed in reestablishing a flock. We cannot make the same mistakes twice with precious lives. We did speak to Dr Jim Hermez, a poultry...

    Hypothermia?

Thank you all so much for your responses. I feel now that there is enough consensus that it wasn't the cold. Our feed is clean and dry, we did not stock pile so it is never more than a month or so old. We store it in an industrial "knack" box (construction site quality) to keep it dry and free...

    Hypothermia?

We are "new" to raising chickens. We have a raised chicken coop inside a large fenced in range area. The coop was built by a reputable designer for up to 16 chickens. Roosting and laying spaces are provided, fir shavings are the current bedding. We feed good quality layer rations. We started...
