    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

I was in the pond pulling out weeds and the gang decided to join me. I feel honored to play momma duck. They're almost six weeks old. You can see how much slower the muscovies are to get their feathers compared to the quackers.

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

So I'd thought I did my due diligence researching if I could keep one goose with a flock of ducks, and only found sources and anecdotes stating yes, no problem. That she'd be happy, think she was a duck, and fit in. And would avoid cliquish behavior amongst the flock. It was after a couple...

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Lots of rain today and yesterday, pond overflowed again. The lil dinosaurs had a blast catching little fish in the runoff. They just turned 4 weeks.

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Never thought I'd be a house-waterfowl person, but here I am looking at goose diapers on Amazon. Lucy goose gets along great with her duck friends though! She is definitely the packleader. Muscovy feathers coming in hot!

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

I have a question for you knowledgeable people lurking here please. Can my ducklings stay outside at night? Right now they spend daytimes in the duck house outside and nighttimes in their brooder inside. Next couple nights will be too cold but after that it's supposed to be in the low 60s at...

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Duck house is done! Minus paint job. Just in time for good weather for them to stay out in during the day. They are 3.5 weeks old now. Of course my daughter wanted to read to them. Enjoying it before it gets too poopy for this

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

She's definitely the friendliest of the non-muscovies! Miss Appleyard is the most skittish and Cheerio the Welshie is somewhere inbetween. I'd say the muscovies are more chill though. Or at least more tolerant of being handled. For some reason Taylor the buff is the biggest so far. Bigger...

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Yes, Taytay the all-yellow duckling is a buff. Your coop looks great! Ours ought to be done this weekend too. At which point the ducklings will immediately begin to live in it, during the day at minimum.

Gotcha, thank you 😊 looking forward to their feathered forms.

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

My partner took our daughter to his dad's so I was able to set up the temporary duck run and have some alone time with the crew. Lap ducks! Also more back/belly/wing feathers are coming in! They're 2.5 weeks, I thought they didn't feather out until at least 4 weeks? Does this mean I kept them...

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

I doubt anyone will mind if you jump in here with your ducks. At least I hope @Tookie doesn't mind lol, I saw others piling on and figured this was the place for it.

Aww! Are they getting along with the chickens?

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

I was depending on the feathers to tell me who were boys and who were girls. Supposedly boy muscovies are supposed to feather out much later than girls? But everyone's getting theirs now. On top of that, it's the biggest one, whom I figgered had to be a boy, who's furthest along. Guess I'll wait...

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Are these feather quills?? Only on a handful of muscovies so far (edit: all the muscovies have them, all about the same except the biggest whose quills are further along), and only on their tails. They're only just over two weeks old. Oh and here they are enjoying some mosquitofish netted from...

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

A few days ago the non-muscovies' voices changed: less of a peep, and more of a cross between a squeaky toy and... an angry squirrel? Lol. First time raising poultry so I'm enjoying watching them grow! All the little things.

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Also, they're only two weeks old but a couple of the muscovies are dramatically larger than the rest. Could size at this age suggest gender? I've heard of the foot thing but I honestly can't tell that any of them have relatively larger feet or legs. Hard to judge when, size-wise, one's a...

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Two weeks old today! Rained a lot last night = tons of pond runoff with tiny fish. Sunny today. Perfect duck conditions. The last pic attached is Booties, you can barely tell his feet were ever messed up.

There. New brooder for rapidly growing waterfowl. May install the heater lamp later. Maybe this will last them until they can go outside. Lol

    Duckling Grow-A-Long!

Right, they definitely can't all fit under it. Seems to work fine as they currently are; even when there's room, some prefer to dogpile on top or outside of it. But I'm wary of trying that outside with temperatures still dipping in low 50s at night. I suppose I'll need to get a bigger brooder...
