    Comparing quail sizes

I know, we are so dry already, it's going to be a hot dry summer. I set 13-17gm eggs, sometimes some 18 if they are not to round that I think they are not a double yoke. I usually can tell by how they fit in the gqf quail egg trays, before I even bother with the scale. I had to make spacers so...

    Comparing quail sizes

We both have been raising the James Marie jumbo brown line C birds, shipped eggs, hatched then selected our breeders by weight culling. I cull by egg size then bird weight at 6 and 8 weeks of age. My second generation has been bigger at 5-6 weeks than the breeders I kept from the original egg...

    Comparing quail sizes

I'm in Ponder, north of Ft. worth. I went with the sportsman because I also raise Jersey giants, Turkey and peafowl. Lots of incubating and hatching. I sometimes have all 3 hatching trays of the hatcher and the one in the sportsman all full of hatching chicks/poults at one time. Adjust what...

    Comparing quail sizes

I use a gqf sportsman incubator. The only modification I had to make was sometimes having to skip spaces so the eggs would fit in the trays and made spacers to hold the trays apart further when stacking. Otherwise I couldn't stack two trays without the larger eggs getting cracked be the top...

    Comparing quail sizes

With my JMF hens it always has to be a big and wide egg to be a double yoke. My tall eggs like that one seem to always be single yoke. So we just eat the really FAT ones. Lol.

You must be doing something right to get those weights. I haven't weighed any of my JMF adults to see where they are after winter. The three in the pic where the ones that something got hold of their leg and broke it through the bottom of the cage. Luckily no more injured birds after I out the...

    Comparing quail sizes

We have all been talking about the size comparison, here is picture proof! Three JMF fresh processed adults on left then I thawed out a package of my frozen "mixed coturnix" and placed three on the right. Look at the difference!!

    Comparing quail sizes

So are mine Unfortunately I lost 3 of my hens tonight. They had broken and torn up legs when I gatherered eggs and checked feeders this evening. Something grabbed their legs through the 1x1/2 inch wire that the floor of my big breeder pen is made of. Spent the next hour putting a second bottom...

I found them on eBay last summer. Had to buy 100 ct this is a pic with my original mixed coturnix eggs, not the JMF.

    Comparing quail sizes

These are some standard eggs with my first JMF eggs that were shipped to me. I was amazed at the size difference so lined then up to compare in this picture. The "standard" eggs were out of mixed birds that were supposed to have a lot of jumbo brown in them but never were "very Jumbo" to me...

    Comparing quail sizes

I really like the JMF birds. I only kept 12 hens and 4 Roos out of my 120ish that hatched. The Roos were over 260 grams and the hens over 300 for keepers at 8 weeks. Culled the smallest 1/2 of the males at 6 weeks, then culled again at 8 weeks and hens at 8 weeks. Then over wintered those birds...

    Comparing quail sizes

Just gathered it tonight, so haven't seen if it's. double yoke or not. Out of the 17 hens I seperated to keep for breeders the smallest egg today was 13.5, most in the 14-15s.

I have a low pressure watering system that starts at my first chicken coop and continues to all of my bird cages/pens. I use the drinking cups with the trigger they have to push with their beak to get water out, and I have three of the little giant low pressure fountains for the chickens...

    Comparing quail sizes

I am wondering if our recent cold snaps have hurt the weight gain. Having trouble keeping water unfrozen and free choice. I am not going to hatch any out for a few months, don't want to mess with it during the coldest months. Might if I had a barn set up, but all my pens and big brooder are...

    Comparing quail sizes

Finally had time and nice enough weather to weigh and cull my JMF 9.5 week olds. Had 44 hens and 13 Roos, culled the smaller Roos at 7 weeks. Hens ranged 245-341gm Average 302gm Roos ranged 252-283gm Average 266.22gm I kept the largest 17 hens that ranged 303-341gm, averaged...

Well my JMF XLD birds are now 7 weeks. I weighed all the males (63), average was 225g, ranged from 198-261g. Kept 13 that weighed 240-261g with average of 248g. All the others are already in the freezer. Next week hope to go through all the hens, weigh and cull. Don't know how many I will keep...

    Comparing quail sizes

I've been so busy I haven't had time to weigh any of my quail. But I am very happy with the JMF birds. At 4 weeks they truly look as big and my standards, as they are in long cages side by side. I have to get my older breeders processed this week so I can spread out the JMF birds. We are having...

    Comparing quail sizes

When I talked to Robbie 2 weeks ago, he said that he was starting some new treatment in a couple of weeks and would only be shipping eggs through the end of Oct. and wouldn't be shipping more until spring. I don't think the doctors have ever figured out what all is going on with his illness. I...

    Comparing quail sizes

Due to the number of quail chicks I have and limited time, I am thinking of weighing groups of chicks and just averaging. I am growing out 120 from the JMF eggs and I have 18 chicks from my last incubation from my old breeders, they are exactly 1 week younger than the JMF chicks. Thinking of...
