I've had several requests for permission to use my photos for other articles... By all means, any that I posted are available to use as needed with my blessings.
Sulmet and Amprolium are both good to have on hand. The Amprol liquid (9.6% sol'n) is 4ml/cc to 1 gallon of water. If you keep the meds in a cool, dry, dark place, they should last a long time.
to you all... Envirogirl, I realized that the "sitting back on the haunches" is a typical sign...
Unfortunately, no, I didn't have a faecal test done. We're just a little remote. I did do a post-mortem on one bird and didn't find any evidence of parasites. At 7 weeks and never been outside, I don't think mine were infected with worms. If yours weren't puffed up like that, then yes, it...
Another thing to look at... I never really paid attention to what was IN the chick starter... the bag says "Medicated Chick Starter". I always assumed that was to protect against Cocci... nope.

I have heard that milk coats the intestines, helping prevent the bugs from doing their thing... maybe that's why. ?
I don't know if the cornmeal or grits would work or not... that's a good question.
I've been told to wait on the yogurt... too much protein. Wait until after the treatment has gone on for several days and she's feeling better.
If she'll eat, grind up raw oatmeal, and mix it 50/50 with the crumbles and feed her that.
she WILL get better.
If Sulmet is all you have, then start with that. I've heard that it can be hard on their tummies, though, so don't over-do it.
I hope she pulls through. Take away any extra protein, and make sure she's drinking.

Corrid is amprolium which the chicks already get in their feed so that wouldn't work, thanks anyway.
Mine were getting Amprolium in their feed, too, when they got it and the Amprol liquid in the water helped kick it.
My understanding is that the Cocci feeds on the protein, so if treatment is over, you should be ok to start giving a little yogurt so they'll build up the "good bugs", but if you can hold off for about 4 weeks, that is best. I've been feeding my patients with a 50/50 mixture of crumbles and...

Kelly, I get my Sulmet at the local feed store, but the Amprol I get online from First State Vet...

Rebecca, I'm not sure about that... perhaps someone knows. I do know that the Sulmet is harder on...

:aww Mudder!!! I'm so sorry!!! If you notice the others looking pooky, use the Sulmet on them now. The Amprolium is great if you have it, but I only use it for advanced cases (way more expensive). Sulmet - 2 tbsp/gallon for the first few days as the instructions state... and to get...
I'm very happy to report that Pearl is feeling MUCH better now, and has even tried to get out of her box a couple of times today. I think she wants to go back with her buddies.
Or, maybe it's just a new resistant strain. It's easy enough to catch when you only have a few birds, but when you have a dozen or so all crowded in the corner trying to stay away from you, it's hard to catch that ONE that is about to step over the edge. Just be ever vigilant.

I know... Damit, I'm still crying...
I think I'm going to set up a brooder on wire for the Orps. I hate to do it, when they're so small - wire just seems cold and impersonal - but if it helps, I may have to do it. I'm just glad that the experience with Sapphire allowed me to save...
You're welcome. It was the hardest thing ever to tell Speckledhen (Cyn) that I had lost Sapphire to it... she was the only chick to hatch from the eggs she sent me, and was a beautiful girl. Cocci is preventable, and is treatable if you know the signs.
The internet and the ability to share...
