Thank you, @Pyxis. I remember 45% as well. If many of my eggs hatch, I'll see how heritable it is and we can eat the mistakes. I will replace that second hen when I can but for now my rooster needs all his ladies. He seems to realize he's being short changed. He's always trying to steal hens...
I have a question for breeders about tail set. One of my hens has a perky fanned out tail. She carries it that way almost always. Here is a picture of her.
The other has a more humpy downward pointing tail. She can perk it up sometimes, but the majority of the time she carries it more...
That's a great price too. The $5 chicks are sold strictly for eating, but buyers can do as they please. I doubt anyone would try to breed them. The question was what to do with culls and how much do they sell for. The $5 chicks have yellow toes or stray white feathers. The $15 chicks are solid...
The breeder I purchase from sells straight run chicks from $5-$15 each depending on color faults. I got my 'all black, one clear toenail' chicks for $8 ea. I know this will seem shockingly low to some people, but if they're priced higher they don't sell quickly enough and their goal is to keep...
It's hard to see in the photo. To me, they look like picked feathers that are becoming tattered and will eventually break at the weak points. But if she's picking her own feathers or being bullied you would be able to observe it over time, I'd think. Here is a thread about depluming mites. Not...
Do you think maybe she or another bird are picking the feathers? I was having some picking issues when mine were still in their grow out pen. Now that they have a lot more space, it stopped.
I do see the red, faintly on some of the birds. The EBay seller, aka Rare Poultry Outpost states that their line came from Cemani Farms. Isn't that the same Cemani Farms that was a poster on this forum? When you start reading all those old threads, and this one, there is a lot of arguing about...
That's interesting. We feed the same as you and don't currently have feather issues. Hard feathers as well as sparse feathers are traits I've noticed with some of the very black birds advertised as being from Indonesian lines, but I don't know enough about it to know if those traits are...
Have you tried addressing the feather issue through nutrition? I did a quick search and saw several different nutrition and environmental based recommendations. "Silkie feathers" on an Ayam Cemani would look something like this.
I remember this place and I remember that post. They dropped off the map for quite a while, are they back? Ayam Cemani originated as a color morph from a multicolor landrace breed. I almost want to repeat that because if you really understand it then you also understand why they don't...
I saw the previous draft of the American standard when it was posted. I don't remember it being that different than the Dutch standard, maybe a little more specific. I do remember that mouth color was mentioned. Here is an excellent article that I pulled from the ACBA website. The genetics...
BE, I think your chicks are really cute. I love their fat bottomed shape and wide stance. They have a lot of personality. I think feather stub inheritance and FM expression are very different. This is a good article about FM expression, you might have already read it. I got the link from an old...
Very cool that you got to pick! I'm on the fence between trying to get a few more AC's with darker color or working with the three I have and hatching out some Hmong Chickens for a meat flock. I love my significant other but he doesn't buy into my madness and I have to keep it...
Our trio is 5 months old now and the hens started laying eggs this month :yesss: Our roo is turning out to be a real gentleman. He does a wing dance for his hens, tidbits to them when he finds good things to eat, and growls to warn them when he senses danger. His crow has improved greatly and he...
Thanks for sharing your perspective. We all must start somewhere is how I feel about it too. I'll be getting more chicks and will be able to hand pick the ones I want. White toenails and color leakage aren't so much of an issue but darker pigmentation and structure are things to keep an eye on.
Maybe some of the breeders who watch this thread will chime in with what they've learned about tongue color. In the meantime, wanna form a losers club? :hit
