Mr. Splay-leg is standing up now, but I'm leaving the hobble on for another couple of days just to be sure. Meanwhile, I have started a new thread with my latest setting (done today), feel free to keep chatting here or join in on the new thread; Setting 80 on 9/8, 10/1, 10/24, and probably 11/16

I put Mr. Splay-leg into the bator earlier today cause he was just getting sat on by other chicks. He flipped, but I put a timer on to remind me to check every 30 minutes, and I put him on his feet. I only had to do that twice. I also gave him 2 syringes of electrolyte water, just to help...

Finally some useful numbers out of the data collecting...the oldest egg I set this time was 15 days old, and working with only the fertile eggs... Egg Age Fertile Hatched Pipped Appear Viable Died In Bator Hatch Rate 15 1 1 0% 14 2 2 0 100% 12 6 2 4 33% 10 4 2 2 1 (My Fault)...

So the original title of this thread suggested the last setting was 8-23. Currently, I plan on continuing to set right through to Christmas, or later. Since there appears to be no way to change my thread title, should I create another thread? I mean, there aren't likely many people setting...

BTW, I moved my 23 3-week-old chicks into my young birds run yesterday. With all but 2 of the cockerels gone, they went in with 2x 15-week-old BCM cockerels, 10x nearly 9-week-olds, and 16x 7.5-week-olds...plus a 7.5 week-old Guinea Fowl and 2x 7.5 week-old Turkeys. So they are the largest group...

37 hatches, 3 pips, 71.43% hatch rate, 73.75% fertility rate (a couple of eggs that I though might have been clears have since hatched). There are still 26 eggs which have shown no signs of life, I will be candling them tomorrow if there's no progress. All but 7 chicks have been moved to the...

Day 20 Update: (Day 20 ends at ~6:00pm tonight) So far I have 20 chicks hatched, and another 8 eggs with pips. Interestingly all of the pips are in the Janoel, while the Brinsea has hatched 4 more eggs than the Janoel. Finally, and just as interesting, I have hatched precisely half of the...

Lolz, so I went out before sunrise to collect my cockerels for processing...couldn't see a darn thing...and couldn't find my hat-brim LED light...so I just started grabbing big birds...;-] I have 2 BCM cockerels in there that I had to make sure I didn't take for processing...anyway, low and...

Well, I thought the goal was approximately 13% of the egg weight by hatch date...so 13/21*18 = 11.14%...but since we don't weigh after lockdown, its simpler to just target 11.5% by day 18. Your deviations (as with mine) are just fine. Different shell densities or porosity, non-ideal storage of...

I do think that there's a good reason layers are called pullets...I have no idea of the science behind it, but if they're too immature they can't produce eggs that can be viable to hatch date, or they struggle surviving the first couple of days after hatch. Certainly what they're fed plays an...

Is that 55% your hatch rate? I mean, excluding clears? Cause it does sound like my problems, e.g. poor nutrition for the layers. My youngest layer is just over 1 year old now, so I shouldn't really have pullet issues...although that may start again soon as my 16 week old pullets start to lay...

Cool, good to know. I certainly did get a good nights sleep!! Whenever I weigh an egg and find a larger or tiny number I always double-check. it. When I checked yesterday my little 23g egg was clear, but I weighed it anyway. It had lost 48% of its original weight......so I weighed it again...

I thought I heard that refrigerating eggs kills their fertility? Did I get that wrong?? Anyway, shame so many weren't viable, but it sure sounds like you're going to have fun with this hatch @WalnutHill . What are your project eggs? I sure like the sound of a sensor boom, that makes so much...

Day 11 Update: Ideal weight loss on Day 11 is 7.03% Janoel: Average weight loss is 5.72%. The thing is designed to run at 50% and it is difficult to get it to stay there. Adding even a small amount of cool water quickly drives it up to 60%...and not adding water causes its alarm to go at...

Well, fwiw, if I put 3 rails in a tray in the Brinsea, I find I cannot fit eggs in that are 65g or larger, I have to move the rail. I can put them in, standing up, but then they aren't touching the bottom of the tray and so did actually fall out when the turner tips them 45 degrees. I should say...
