This was a record length winter for Anchorage. I'm only 25 but I've lived here my whole life and this is the latest I ever remember having snow. It's awful :(. As for the leghorns, mine are doing fine. When it gets super cold slap some Vaseline on to protect from frostbite. I got several a...
Svtrggjndhdgvgv! Gahhhhhhhh! So mad! I can't believe this! I'm so done with this snow! I was born here and I remember stinky winters but I have never dealt with such a lousy, basically non-existent spring. I always said I wouldn't move but I'm seriously considering a change of scenery. :(
My guess is because we don't have a plethora of soy and corn fields up here to supply them. If they are milling from local farms here they probably can't get enough of those two for their feed.
I went back to Walmart to look at their "Alaskan" feed and the cost and the gentleman that works in the back informed me that the "Alaskan grown" feed they sell in milled in the lower 48 and only bagged up here. The cheap stuff I buy was bagged two weeks ago so I'm not too worried about it...
The feed we get is Manna I believe but I'd have to double check. I don't know if its organic or not but we get what we can afford. Unfortunately Fred Meyers has always been a bit overpriced for us so we have to shop at Walmart. I'm not that old but it still is crazy to be able to remember back...
Off topic, I guess, but I have a question:
Currently we are buying our layer pellet feed at Walmart in a 50 lb bag for just under $14. Is there anything cheaper in Alaska? I'm browsing the possibility of using Amazon and free super saver shipping from the lower 48 but no luck yet.
I've only got 12 eggs I'm hatching and I'm not sure how they will do and if they even hatch how many will be pullets so I might be interested in pullets if you have any to spare.
The person at the feed store told me heaters shouldn't be used in plastic water pans (possibility of melting) but the heated water pan I got is plastic, so I don't know. I was going to get one if the hot plate things for my galvanized one but it was $80 and I needed to get a larger water pan as...
Oliversmom, I don't know if you are interested in roos, but once my chicks are old enough to tell I'll be culling the roos from my flock as I'm sure my neighbors would kill me if I kept them. If you are interested and ever come to the valley I can keep you updated. I have 19 chicks currently...
I've been able to find an old ordinance for the City of Wasilla, but I don't live within city limits and so I believe the bourough code is what we would adhere to. But, thus far, I've been unable to teach down the bourough codes regarding chickens, if there even are any.
To: Oliversmom, that is so awful. I'm so sorry you had great a great loss.
To MatSu people: does anyone know where I can read up on the local laws about chickens? I know plenty of people that raise chickens so I just assumed it is okay but I want to know the specifics as we are getting ready...
Hi! I'm new to chickens (had them for two weeks) but a lifelong Alaskan. I've lived in Wasilla my entire life. Anyone nearby? I'd live input as I'm starting my flock and finishing my coop!
