Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Any luck with broody BR's? Our "other chick" (now "Betty") decided to go broody on us this week- complete with plucked out undercarriage feathers and is superglued to the nest. She's now slept on her dud eggs at least 3 nights so we're working on trying to get some fertile eggs to see how...

We got super lucky with our first batch- 10/10 pullets, all have now started laying. Thank you for looking!!

What a handsome roo!!! Are you hoping for a broody or are you planning to incubate some eggs?

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Both chicks are now laying pullets and started around week 22. Bonnie the Beak's are brown and Betty's are pink. I put Betty's egg next to a green egg from an Easter Egger to try and show the color:

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Probably safe to say we managed to get incredibly lucky and have 10 out of 10 pullets, all 13 weeks of age! Late Bloomer really was a late bloomer, and while they're hatchery quality, she's the one that got the super pretty face and big eyes. Now comes the wait for the first egg!! Late...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Still looking like 2 pullets here in week #12. Late Bloomer (top, both photos) has a more vibrant look while the other (bottom, both photos) is more faded, but both still have little pullet combs. Late Bloomer is tentatively named "Bonnie the Beak" for her I'm the boss attitude.

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Yes, me too! As we approach 9 weeks with nobody crowing or growing bright red combs, I'm starting to actively hope that I got 10/10 pullets, 2 each of 5 different breeds. Maybe this will be our hen-roo...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

"Late Bloomer" seems to be the self appointed leader, now pecking everyone at feeding time and allowing only 2 buff orpington friends to sleep next to her/him, driving all others away. Also the only chick to take issue with the 'chicken in the mirror', taking the stance (s)he walks around with...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Thank you! The tail feathers pointing odd directions after our vacation definitely gave me a little flutter. As everyone can probably tell, these are our first chickens!

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

We went away for a week (chicks are now 8 weeks old) and my, how they grew! Out "other" BR chick's tail changed and seems lighter, though the comb is still small and yellow. All 3 below are the "other" BR chick at 8 weeks of age: "Late Bloomer" at 8 weeks:

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Thanks again to Madison for posting updated BR chicks of one of each sex. Your babies also make very clear what someone in another thread had said about cockerels looking like white birds with black stripes and pullets looking like black birds with white speckles, especially your last picture...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Thanks shortgrass! Hoping the different paths these BRs took to this point will land them in the nest box! I'll continue to update the pictures as we go for others to reference, hopefully the tail of two pullets...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

I hope I hope I hope! From the front on a roosting pole they're difficult to distinguish, but from above and behind, it's still easy to tell who's who. Day 42 Late Bloomer top left, other BR bottom right Day 42, Other BR chick left, Late Bloomer right

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Hi juliechick! We're on day 41 and pullet-hood seems more and more likely. The two BR chicks have somewhat different combs but at almost 6 weeks we haven't seen anything resembling Madisan's beautiful cockerel. It is also becoming more difficult to tell which is which if they're perched or...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Thank you for the information about the slower to feather gene! So far Late Bloomer still has the black wash legs and as of today, 31 days, no comb development. Looking good so far. The tail feathers are still extremely short and s(he) is still only about half the size of the other same age...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Tremendously helpful! Yours are the first definitive pictures I've seen after looking through multiple other threads. Thank you again for taking the time to post pictures of your beautiful babies!

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

Madisan, Wow, that is a huge difference in the comb, and the multiple thicker white bars throughout the wing. As of today, day 28, I don't have any big difference between the BR combs and it does seem like Late Bloomer is beginning to speckle out more as the days go by. Thank you so much...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

OK Here are day 25 pics from a couple days ago. Figure I'll update once a week or so in case anyone else is looking for comparison shots at various ages down the road. The "Late Bloomer/possible roo" is now about 1/2 the size of the other 9 chicks, including the other BR. Late...

Barred Rock... Late bloomer or rooster?

The 2 day old photos (post 12) aren't great but it seems one BR had a bigger white spot (but still pretty tough to know which was which- there are 2 BR, 2 Australorps that are all blurry dark chicks). Now looking at day 6 pictures, the chick at the top has those soft little bars just barely...
