Cinders opened a sleepy eye, barely able to register Enigma's whinny. She found her newborn curled-up behind her and nickered calmly to it. Slowly, she climbed to her feet, allowing the filly to nurse once it was standing, too.
"Thank you," Cinders said, looking at Zephyra. "For everything."
Nudged by Sage, the filly stumbled over to Cinders, tripped over her sleeping dam and landed in a heap behind the grullo filly.
All Cinders did was snort and stretch out on her side.
Cinders was lost to deep REM sleep, relying on herd mates to keep watch.
Her nosy filly had approached Sage and was stretching her neck out, trying to sniff him.
Cinders' head drooped as she dozed. Waking with a start, she checked on her foal then curled-up, falling asleep almost instantly.
Despite being tired after her 'trip', Cinders' filly didn't sleep immediately; she followed after Zephyra.
Cinders waited until the filly had let go of her then walked slowly over to Zephyra, the filly following unsteadily. While she wouldn't trust Zoe or Sage yet, she trusted Zephyra completely.
Cinders had apparently remembered Cochise trying to kill Enigma. She pinned her ears and glanced about frantically, squealing.
At her feet, her foal was trying to struggle to its feet for the first time.
Analiya was torn; she wanted to go back. She was too afraid to journey off by herself. She never had, and she didn't want to start. The grullo mare stuck close to Eowyn.
Cinders, not Dour's sharpest descendant, stared stupidly at the black lump for several minutes. Finally, instincts started kicking in, and she neared it, nudging it gently.
Analiya didn't know anything about being in a sister's shadow. She was Dusky's firstborn, and the only of her fillies allowed to stay in Titan's herd.
"Maybe I should go back," she said, but she was afraid to make the journey back alone. "Or maybe I shouldn't live in my dam's herd and share...
"I wonder if they even met the wolves," Dusky said. She whinnied loudly, calling. "ANALIYA!!"
With Eowyn, Analiya's ears swiveled. "Did you hear that?"
