They say to not use it as a sole heat source in buildings/rooms under 50 degrees. I have used it as my brooder in the garage, but I would not be using it outside....it was below zero in the garage, not to mention the barn, the last two days.
I did keep chicks in my garage when it was chilly this fall, like in October, with an Ecoglow, but they were older and had some feathers. They did fine and slept under it for a while; when they stopped sleeping under it I took it out. The recommendation is to have the ambient temperature 50...
I am cleaning mine up after taking t from my 3-4 week olds to get it ready for the next batch.
I dunno about you, but I've touched the heater element for an incubator. Ouch. This works because they press themselves against the warmth. There is no fire hazard. I'd worry about shavings getting...
I'm trying again with hatching. I have 10-12 eggs from one place and a dozen from another shipping Monday. I'll set them together to avoid this sharing issue and hope for a better hatch.
I took a long strip of cardboard and cut out an opening for the brooder so they can share it and so the big...
Not yet. Between the kids and the chicks and having to run buy a third waterer, I just now sat down. The divider got knocked overand I watched for a while to see what happened. The bigs ran around for a few and ignored the littles, but when they got bored, they pecked at the toes of the littles...
Well, hm. I'm really wishing I had two. I have some week old babies and some day old babies that just hatched, with hopefully more hatching today or tomorrow.. The week old guys are picking on the day olds. Do you think it's too early to take away the Eco from the week old's for the newborns...
Look at this trio of bad boys up on top:lol: I do suspect these ones could be roos...they have all taken a peck at me when I caught them
I forgot contact paper while out. Blargh.
The fuzzybutts love it. They come out, scratch around, eat, drink, and then go huddle under and around it and nap. Repeat. It's like an artificial mom, and I can't help but think that is beneficial to their well being. One already hopped up on top and pooped on it.
Kinda wish I had two. These...
I ended up putting it over them, as they did look cold, where they then seemed to warm up, then came out for a snack. They put themselves to bed under it, and they were cruising around the brooder this morning when I checked on them. I can hear them cheeping, but it doesn't sound distressed or...
Ok, they are all huddled together but not under it. Urgh. Maybe they are just stressed from coming to the clinic, then the ride home, then me setting them into their new home with help from my 4 kids.
Ha, and just in time..,,a client is bringing me some chicks to my office Saturday, and I'll take it, set it up, and the babies will have a warm place to hang out while I finish work. Then I can bring it all home and settle them into their brooder box (a dog crate). I'd be scared of breaking a...
I read this thread a few weeks ago, back when I planned to get chicks next year.
Well, I ordered one Sunday from MPC. I hope it gets here soon...some of the eggs a friend gave me seem kind of far along....
I just can't stomach the idea of a heat lamp in my house with my four crazy kids. :/...
