Thanks. I'm honestly having a difficult time processing all of this. It's hard to have chickens dying and know that something that I did caused them to die. Harder still that I had to kill 2 of them myself to keep them from suffering any more.
And I agree. I've tried to state again and again that our situation was the perfect storm of bad circumstances. Poop and moisture have to be managed in a run. I don't promote bare dirt. That's why we started over with pine shavings.
All composting materials have some level of fungus. Generally there is no risk. Our case was the perfect storm causing dangerous levels of Aspergillus to form.
Came home to find Ethyl unable to walk and laying in her own poop. No choice but to euthanize her. Praying that this is the end of this mess and the remaining 4 will stay healthy.
On a much brighter note there were 2 eggs today so somebody else is laying.
Thank you. The doctors discussed several different treatments when they came the first time. It was decided that there was nothing that would affect the fungus at the stage it was in. The 6 birds that were left showed no signs of anything respiratory. I sent a message to Dr. Clark inquiring...
Things have taken another turn for the worse. Yesterday Shirley was just laying around and barely able to walk. It was obviously a neurological issue. She did not have control of her limbs. I went home at lunch time and got her to eat a little from my hand and drink some water from a spoon. By...
I think back to something you said earlier about how many deaths there might be that no one realized was from fungus. I do not want to be an alarmist but being aware of fungal growth in anything organic that we are exposing these birds to is just good flock management.
BTW...I gave up drinking...
lol...I agree completely Rich. I fell like it is vitally important to let a good amount of decomposition and curing so to speak take place before putting any freshly ground chips to use. Procrastination wins out once again.
I'm sure they will. :D Their apple cart has been upset a few times in their short little lives. First adding the 2 extra ones when we put them in the coop. 2 different rounds of cockerel removals and then this. No wonder they are confused.
