Hmm,
Well, my little flock has always been a mix of mostly barnyard mixes, even the Turkens I suspect are mixes, and no two chickens look much alike. Mine seem to pick their hang out buddies more by status, where they are in the pecking order.
Here there are today, behaving quite in brotherly fashion. They both have a few scabs from their sparring last week, but I checked and nothing serious. Dabbed a little iodine on them. Paco is more friendly and forward. I like my birds to get used to me handling them in case I ever have to treat...
This is all very interesting, thank you. These are the first cockerels we've hatched here, so I'm learning a lot. We only hatched pullets before (dumb luck I guess)
We have a mix of hens, a few "carriocas" or Turkens who could probably handle Lucio. But I would choose to keep Paco (the black and white fella) because he is actually quite compact. I've seen a lot of roosters around that look like him and they are not very large. And Paco is showing himself to...
No, we had a broody hen and no rooster so I got some fertile eggs from my neighbor a farms up the road. We live in a very rural area in South America, none of the farmers keep pure chicken breeds here, they are all barnyard mixes.
Except for the people who breed fighting cocks, so it's...
@Rhodebar Lover thanks for your help. I just have a question: Will Lucio (the late blooming cockerel) eventually come into his own and do rooster things (like crow, mate, and stand up) or will the dominance of his brother keep him in this limbo forever? If he'd be happier elsewhere, I can try to...
Thank you. I've felt so confused. I was like, yes those are saddle feathers alright, but why don't you crow? Or mate? Or stand up?
And the very weird thing is that the one I thought was a pullet hatched first and is bigger -- but the little black fella is dominant. I guess he just matured more...
I guess I need to get more hens. I only have six, and the older ones want no part of Paco. They kick his butt when he tries to mount them. I hope they sort out the fighting, I'd like to keep them both.
Hi folks, I have two 21 week old chicks, both hatched here on our farm. One of them, named Paco, is no mystery. He had saddle feathers and a long tail at 10 weeks, started crowing at 12 weeks, trying mount the hens at 16 weeks, and now has a steady girlfriend laying eggs in a clutch. Looks like...
