It’s been along time but if anyone remembers this thread I have an update. 1. We moved. 2 I haven’t lost one chicken to raccoons or anything else in 5 years. We have a 10 foot wooden fence and a concrete floor coop. I did find a neighborhood chihuahua chewing on one of my chickens but I rescued...
I have to amend my comments on my coop. One night I found the racoon on the roof of my 8 foot coop. :he I think the only answer for raccoons is seal your coop. If the coop hadn't been sealed the raccoon would have gotten a head off one of the chickens, the opening without the mesh wire is big...
@ Ed
the floor of the coop is too high for a racoon to reach (I looked up raccoon specs to see how high they can reach) so I'm not worried about that, I'm a bit worried they can climb the posts to get to the coop.
yeah, mine do that too, I'm taking the panel down soon it was just a grow out pen for the chicks. I'll be wiring around the base of the coop with hot wire.
that's what I was thinking of doing is getting a single strand of hot wire. I have to go to the feed store today so I can rice them out and see what I can come up with.
the netting is just some nylon net that I was using to keep the chicks from escaping. The run is going to be removed soon. I was thinking of greasing up the posts so the raccoons can't climb them axle grease or something, I have some sheet metal lying around (doesn't everybody :) I can try...
I thought of some sort of perch about 2 feet off the ground that they could hop up on and fly the remaining 2 feet to the doorway? I think I've seen that somewhere before. I could just try it and see if they get the idea.
Opinions please, I designed this after a lot of trial and error in an attempt to keep the chickens safe from predators and from the wet etc. What do you think?
it's 4 feet off the ground, and they use a ladder to get in, I was hoping they would learn to fly in, they roost in the front and...
It was early morning so I think it was a hawk, I watched one swoop into the yard today. The chick is about 7 weeks, fully feathered but still small. We don't have foxes here, or skunks, but plenty of birds of prey. I think the chick had spent the night outside of the coop, keeping the gene pool...
lost a chick this morning... all I found was a pile of feathers. Can't tell if it was an eagle, raven, hawk, vulture, owl, cat, dog, raccoon or possibly a mink.
:(
They are a relentless foe, that's for sure. At one time I was feeding them dog food to keep them away from the chickens, didn't work for long. Then I just raised the coops way off the ground because chickens like to roost anyway. There is nothing worse than finding your favourite chicken dead...
My coop is 4 feet off the ground. I looked up how high a raccoon can reach standing on it's hind legs and reaching it's hands above its head, I don't remember the exact number now but it was around 3 feet. Now if only my chickens would consistently use the new coops!!! But so far so good, no...
those are great tips, save me a lot of trial and error. Thanks so much. Nothing seems to have been around lately no birds taken at all. Lots of ravens and eagles but the chicken yard is in an orchard and they have a lot of cover which is a mixed blessing, some of that cover hides raccoons or...
