    He needed the spur removed because it caused him problems when walking, roosting and "other" duties.... :) Mean roosters here never live long enough to grow spurs. I don't want them in my gene pool!

    Holding him firmly and a tiny twist with the pliers and they pop off too! Really simple!

    He is the only rooster that I had to do that to in 50+ years of chicken raising... He is also the only Araucana rooster I have ever owned.

    The one I removed was over 4 inches long. It actually interfered with his walking.

    You don't ruin the spur using the pliers. The spur root is still there. The spur will start growing right away.

    The pliers method works great. My son and I did my Araucana rooster last spring. He held the rooster against his chest and I twisted the spur off. He said the rooster didn't even flinch. He only bled two drops of blood. I separated him from the hens for two days. I would recommend this procedure...
