    Most certainly, a good rooster can make a big difference. I have heard stories here of them chasing hawks off. Going for the head/eyes, is a very common tactic, as is plucking all the flight feathers. This provides the hawk the fastest kill, and least chance of escape. Glad your bird escaped.
