    are hatcheries all like this?

I agree with you. Which is why I said I personally will never buy from them again. But there are people that only see their birds as money makers and this hatchery does sell chicks cheaper than the feed stores around here, so somebody will buy from them. I was just meaning the above suggestions...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Thank you very much! I was going to wait until spring anyhow to see what I end up with here. I had wanted 5 BO pullets and 5 BR pullets and a roo. The hatchery only offered straight run so I bought 10 of each. Now watch all the ones I have left be boys :)

    are hatcheries all like this?

Update: I ended up not doing the necropsy because it costs $175. Hubby said not for a batch of $40 chicks. So on last Monday I finally saw a little bloody stool in the brooder. Started dosing them with Corid and havent lost anymore since! I went ahead and gave my other birds the preventive dose...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Thank you! I had just packed one up right before you posted this, so Im ready. I tried googling but couldnt find any info. I just started Corrid for the remaining chicks. Hopefully it helps. I also dumped all their bedding, disinfected the brooder, waterers, and feeders before refilling...

    are hatcheries all like this?

I dont even know where to begin on sending one off for a necropsy. Purdue University is the nearest ag-type school but I only know where the extension office is. Bio-security: We are doing the best we can there. We wear different shoes and change our clothing between the chicks and the adults...

    are hatcheries all like this?

So as of right now out of 23 chicks I have 11 left. 20 were purchased at the above hatchery, 3 from the feed store and put in the brooder before I really realized there was a problem. All 3 from the feed store are gone and I have never lost a feed store chick. The other 9 were the hatchery...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Thank you very much for your advice. Im not quite sure if this hatchery is NPIP certified or not but they were featured in a Mother Earth News article a few years back (found it by googling the hatchery name). I do want to let everyone know that the owner did finally return my email today and...

    are hatcheries all like this?

I have REALLY thought about doing this. I bought the buffs because I was hoping to get a few good broody hens. You know, self sustaining flock and all that. I dont have room to have a ton of different breeds, but I could certainly work with what Ive got. Id wind up with good egg layers and dual...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Ahhh I understand now :). If they would have answered my emails, I would have just assumed they had an off day with cleaning the cages, had a larger hatch than expected and werent set up for it yet, something. And all of those things may still be true, but when they wont answer it makes it look...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Im sorry. Maybe I shouldnt have named them? I just dont want anybody else to get chicks through them until/unless they clean it up and take better care of them. I hate to give bad reviews or talk badly about any business. Always have to give the benefit of the doubt. Had they bothered to answer...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Update: Ive now lost 6 of the chicks. Ive been trying to get ahold of the hatchery for 2 days now and have gotten absolutely no response. But when I was making arrangements to buy the chicks emails, texts and phone calls were answered promptly. This is Akers Hatchery and Eggs in Salem, In...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Im not sure if animal control would do anything about livestock. Here in Indiana we have a Board of Animal Health for livestock, which Ive already complained to. I havent heard back from them or seen anything on the news so I dont know if theyve investigated or not. I have told several people in...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Hehe I finally told hubby about the three I snuck in last night...after I made him biscuits and gravy :). He just shook his head and laughed at me. I think an intervention is needed here lol.

    are hatcheries all like this?

Thank you. Im sorry you went through that. Ive stayed away from craigslist because of stories like yours. I think from now on I will stick with ordering my meat chicks. Im hoping to be able to hatch my own layers next year and stick with the breeds Ive got. We'll see how that goes when I walk...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Hey, I figured out this quoting thing! Lol. I have no idea what is involved in getting a hatchery licensed in Indiana, and I'm nowhere near to hatching my own eggs. But I may look into it. Indiana doesnt seem to have quite as many regulations on small farms as other states. The family running...

    are hatcheries all like this?

Update: So the one chick that I thought had died, didnt! I had watched this little guy close his eyes and slowly lean backwards until he was on his back with his legs straight out behind him. The other chicks started walking over him. But when I reached in to pull him out, he opened his eyes and...
