Last Friday through Sunday I let out the chicks about 7-8am each morning, leaving the brooder door open. I checked on them frequently Friday, and less so on Saturday and Sunday. They went out to explore and play in the run despite cold weather, ducking back into the brooder to warm up.
I...
I have an open-air hoop coop, so they're staying in the brooder with the heating pad until the weather warms up more and they feather out.
Mine are bantams, so I can keep them in the smaller brooder a little longer.
That's great, having help! I can't leave for lunch, I'd use the whole time just commuting.
Once the chicks are out of the brooder I won't be as concerned, but right now they're so small...
Same here. I work 10 hour days so I can take off on Friday. I need a day for errands, doctors' appointments, other chores that I cannot do on the weekend.
I picked up ten chicks on Thursday!
Outdoor brooder, so far no issues:
I took vacation Thursday and Friday to monitor my new charges, make sure they were doing okay. And then I was off on the weekend as well.
But tomorrow I go back to work, leaving before dawn, so I won't see my chicks...
Woo!
I found a hatchery about an hour's drive from me that hatch Sussex bantams.
Yesterday I got an email reply to inform me that they are expecting a hatch next week.
I let them know that I am interested, yes! :celebrate
The hoop coop is almost done, and I have to create a brooder, so much...
It's about a 2 hour drive for me, but I will give it a shot. Thanks!
I did ask to join that FB group. They wanted to know who referred me so I gave them your BYC moniker.
Thanks @alwaystj9! I found and ordered one, it arrived yesterday: EcoGlow Safety 600.
I just plugged it in, and the heat radiating was warmer than my hand, though not a lot warmer...maybe 99°?
I want bantams, but most places only sell them SR. Apparently they are difficult to sex as day-olds, get easily injured.
So I order SR, get some roosters. Or get all hens.
I also could order only female chicks at $12 each, and they could die within a week. I'd be out $$ as well.
There are no...
Thanks, I do appreciate the information. Unfortunately McMurray doesn't have any of the bantam breeds I was hoping to find: Easter Eggers, Welsummers, Delaware, or Barred Rock.
It gets hot here, so I am trying to find a bantam that has a good to very good record of egg production along with...
Our only farm/feed store is Tractor Supply. I am going to check with a couple local hardware stores to see if they get chicks, or can order them.
ETA: there's also Agri Supply, where I purchased the cattle panels.
I have been searching for hatcheries within a couple hours' drive, NONE have bantams, just standards. Or Silkies. Some think those are cute, but I prefer a clean legged breed.
There's a Mennonite farm store about an hour away, but it only offer standards.
Checked both CL and FB. Nothing.
Homework? :lol::lol::lol:
Thanks. You nailed it...I am a medical coordinator, an organizational person. I want to do the best I can, so I have to research thoroughly before even starting. 📋✏️🔍
I'll keep an eye out for scratched and dented brooders. :thumbsup
It depends if bantams are available at Tractor Supply. If I can't find them locally then I will bite the bullet and have them shipped.
I'm leaning towards either Easter Eggers, Welsummers, or possibly Barred Rock bantams. Those three are consistently described as friendly, and very good...
Anyone every buy from https://www.chickensforbackyards.com/ ?
They offer Barred Rock bantams females for $11.66 ea. They have other bantam breeds but no Welsummers. The EE's are SR only, $5.45, S/H is $35.00. :idunno
Thanks for your info.
I've checked 7 hatcheries that carry bantams.
Most only offer straight run, about $5.00 per chick.

Stromberg's S/H $38.00
Cackle (9 chick min) S/H $47.00
Ideal (minimum $40). S/H. $20.00
