    Cookie Tin water heater

Quote: I turn ours on at dusk when I am going to close the coops, when I know temps will drop below 26 at night. Otherwise, the waters don't seem to freeze due to the coops being closed up and holding enough heat on their own. We then turn them off during the day on days it is going to get...

    Cookie Tin water heater

Ours are inside the coop and we got down to 5 degrees last night with no frozen water. We use mostly a 40 watt bulb in the cookie tin this time of year for a one gallon plastic waterer. Some of the ones with 25 watt bulbs have a little icing up inside the waterer, but it still flows so they...

    Cookie Tin water heater

yes, this is perfect for plastic gallon waterers. That is what most of mine are that I use the cookie tin water heater for. Thanks so much for everyone posting their experiences with it. I find it very helpful with all the waterers we have here, it would be impossible to keep up with...

    Cookie Tin water heater

So glad to see folks are benfiting from the cookie tins water heaters. They have proven a life saver for me and my flocks during winter. I had not considered using them outdoors, but you guys have come up with some good ideas to make it work. Due to the lower temps outdoors than indoors...

    Cookie Tin water heater

If you use outdoor wiring, I would think this would be fine outdoors. You would also likely need a higher watt bulb, as outdoor temps are typically much colder than indoors. Whenever you mix plugs and water, you always want to make sure you are plugging into a GFI outlet to prevent mishaps...

    Cookie Tin water heater

We have only ever used 25-40 watt bulbs in ours. The cookie tins are just the typical size you buy Christmas cookies in. We use the candlelabra type bulbs, so they're long and thin to fit in most any cookie tin. I've got all mine going and no frozen water. We also only use these on our...

    Cookie Tin water heater

Sooner, I don't use metal waterers anymore, but my experience with them is the cookie tin is not hot enough to keep the metal waterers from freezing. Of course, I didn't try higher watt bulbs as we switched to all plastic waterers. They may work, I just can't confirm it - maybe with a higher...

    Cookie Tin water heater

They are primarily for plastic waterers. I do not recommend using them on metal ones. We use the bought metal heaters for metal waterers.

Quote: I'm not sure I understand what you built or are using it on, but I use these in at least 12 coops every year with success. There is no way I could swap that many waterers or deal with ice in winter. These are a life saver!

The only "wiring" exposed to the chickens is the cord. Mine have never bothered it, but like nancy mentioned you can run it threw a pipe or piece of conduit.

    Cookie Tin water heater

We use these only on plastic waterers here. I do not know if they will work for metal ones. Give it a try and let us know. I'm glad this is proving helpful to so many. No frozen water is a major time saver for us and I'm sure much less stress for others, as well as our birds.

    Cookie Tin water heater

rick - I'm not sure about the daytime timer idea. I find I need mine most at night to keep the water open. Otherwise, it freezes solid and they would not get water in the morning. I can usually turn it off during the day if temps come up high enough. B'ville - I'm glad to hear it's working well.

DaKid - I do not find that these work well outdoors. I also raise turkeys and use the heated dog dishes for them. They are perfect for that size bird and work really well - worth the investment. Bring them in over summer and back out in the winter - they'll last a long time. Also the tin...

    Cookie Tin water heater

Quote: These are perfect for plastic waterers and exactly what I use them for. If you only get just below freezing, a 25 watt bulb works well to keep it open. If you get into single digits, 40 watt is better. I try not to use the 40 watt unless I have too as the water does tend to get too...

    Cookie Tin water heater

You're very welcome. Thawed water is one of the most essential requirements for your chickens. I have found this most helpful with my water situation and thought most others would too. Add the economical factor and it is worth its weight in gold.

    Cookie Tin water heater

Noriko, I recommend these as the safer indoor water heaters, if built properly. There are dog water dishes and metal heater bases that work better for outdoors. You could probably use this cookie tin one, but with a higher watt bulb.

    Cookie Tin water heater

Thought I'd bump this up with winter coming. I hope this proves helpful for others in keeping their waterers thawed for their chooks. Reminders..safety first -keep heated items away from shavings by placing them on bricks or cement blocks. -always use GFI outlets when dealing with water -you...

    Cookie Tin water heater

Hi everyone. I'm glad this was so helpful to so many. It has been a life saver for us with 13 chicken waterers to monitor daily. The chickens don't bother the cords at all. I've been using these for years and never had a problem. As for how many to plug in, that would depend on the...

    Cookie Tin water heater

The cords are not exposed to weather so work fine for inside the coop. I've been using them for years and never had any problems. We replace bulbs yearly, check the wiring, use GFI outlets and all works well. Jody
