I suggest you put some kind of barrier around the crate. they will kick all of the shavings out. it will get pretty dusty.

I used pine shavings and I used a couple bricks to give the waterer hight. if you have a wire dog crate. you can stick in branches for them to roost.

all my chickens are indoors and they stay in dog crates through out winter. I let them out once a day to play in the house with supervision then after a while they go back in
